Do you find that you can work so much better between 11pm and 5am?

Asked by richardhenry (12692points) March 17th, 2009 from iPhone

Without all the distractions? I’m a web developer, and that’s certainly the case for me. What do you do?

I’m up with insomnia. The house was cold, and it woke me up. It’s toasty now, but it’s too late. If I fall back to sleep I’ll be late for work…Thinking about mopping the kitchen floor at the moment…

Hey its 430am right now over here :). I dont have any type of job that i can work at night, but my mind is definitely more active and awake in these hours.

Go Team DSPS :P

Yep… these are my brain’s power-hours as well. Now if I could just get motivated to do something with it! – 4:30AM

@uberbatman Thanks for posting that link… I’d never heard of DSPS before, and I’ve suffered with it all my damn life!

I agree 100%. Daytime has phases, morning, afternoon… The movement of the Sun & changes in lighting creates different ambiences that makes it feel like time is passing. Night has no such sensation of time movement, so there is no feeling of rush nor being constrained by time. I work more efficiently & creatively without the pressure a sense of time can cause.

For me it’s about 10pm to 2am.. then 5am to 7am.. those are my windows of maximum brain power.. if it’s not those hours.. I’m a vegetable…

prasad's avatar

Could be. I think it’s because then there’re no disturbances as in day-time.
Me? I hardly can do this. You can find me dead asleep during that time.

pfff,

it’s ridiculous. I’m such a night owl. Thing is, daytime, it never is really quiet. I mean, you can drown ambient noise out with something else, or close your doors and windows, but you never get that calm quiet time. Emails fly in, something is in the news, family members ask you something.

3:30 here btw.
I do most of my work at night. Right now I’m writing translation instructions for Arabic translators. I can’t write worth for crut during daytime.

I’m one of those early morning folks. I’m hot from 5am to about noon then the distractions creep in. I’ll leave those 11pm to 5am hours to you.
I must admit that I’ve found this site to be a pleasant distraction and have even checked it if I get up in the middle of the night.

My mind works wonderfully between the hours of 11p and 5am…....dreaming those wild and crazy dreams that I dream.

Lupin's avatar

I can make my mind work overtime and dream those wild crazy dreams if I eat cheese about an hour before bed. Happens every time.

No. I usually get into a zone where I think I’m working better, but when I wake up I realize it was all crap. I just become exhausted and lower my standards ridiculously to get things done. In the end, I find it easier to go to sleep at 10pm if I have a lot to do and wake up at 3:30 or 4 and start working. I’m a morning person, what can I say?

casheroo's avatar

I do my best work between 10 to midnight. But, that’s just me.

My company is pretty flexible with my hours as long as I put in 8 hours a day. I decided I should work when I’m the most effective. I currently work 4 hours in the morning 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, which allows me to go to my required meetings and get on the same page with my fellow developers. I then work 8:00 PM – midnight. I’ve found 4 hour chunks to be about right for my needs. It allows me more time with my family (e.g. my daughter gets out of preshool at 2:15 PM and I can pick her up) and I can run errands or whatever in the afternoon.

I work second shift, from 1 pm to 9 pm, and that is my best time to get things done, and my mind works best during that part of the day. I like second shift, because there is none of that getting up early that I hate so much, (mornings are for the birds). I can stay up late, which I seem to need and enjoy, go to bed, sleep in late, and still have time to Fluther before I head back in to work again. Since I don’t watch TV, I don’t mind missing anything that’s on TV during the prime time hours.

SeventhSense's avatar

No, I’m best between 5pm-12am.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I definitely work best at that time, too RH. I don’t know what it is, but it’s kind of magical. I got so much stuff done last night after 9:00 pm, and like nothing done before that.

wundayatta's avatar

I can work anytime, day or night. I choose to work between nine am and 1 Pm (not continuously, and not all on the same thing). I’m trying to cut back so that I go to bed by midnight every night.

I am such a day person. You could set your clock by my getting up (6:30 am) and going to bed (11:30 pm) It hardly ever varies unless you count the occasional rainy Saturday morning where I might not get up until 7.
I do my best work until lunchtime – afternoons are for distractions.

futurelaker88's avatar

maybe not THAT late, but i def need to start @ or around 8. if i sit down any earlier (time/or date before the last day its due) i WILL NOT do it. i dont know why that is, but if its not the day before its due, it wont get done. some people say its bad to work like that, i find that people like my work, and thats when its done lol so…ill stick with it. ;)

TitsMcGhee's avatar

That’s when I do the vast majority of my school work. I can try and try, but there just is no way that it will get done before that.

DesireeCassandra's avatar

When I can’t sleep (most nights) I often get these awesome ideas for things. For a business, a painting, a picture, a recipe, anything! I think to myself, I should write that down, then fall asleep. Its pretty annoying. haha

mattbrowne's avatar

I’m a daylight person.

Now, this is great news. I have another place to visit during my best hours, which are from about 10 PM to about 2 AM. It seems that I will be in good company. I am the night owl and my husband is the early bird.
