What are some good vocabulary words?

Asked by fortris (683points) March 17th, 2009 from iPhone

I have an assignment to do fine ten vocabulary words and define them, does anyone have some good ones? (I’m a sophmore in high school, but in an English honors class)

You will get many truculent replies if you seek homework help here on Fluther. Jellies are reticent to provide you with your answers! :)

@bythebay while your quip may sound very opaque and somewhat arcane, I gave you lurve for a brilliant answer!!

fortris's avatar

I have five! Halfway there!

It’s a bit of an aberration to relinquish assistance with school work.

@SuperMouse: As you are no prevaricator, I accept your accolade, without reticence.

Maybe we here at Fluther should vote to make defenestration the official punishment for jellies requesting assistance with homework.

Find something that interests you and learn the terminology associated with it.

For instance, the parts of a church have specific names: apse, chancel, narthex, ambulatory, nave, transept. You can go crazy with architecture: vestibule, wainscoting, balustrade, portico, patio, veranda.

In the words of Bill O’Reilly, “bloviate”, “morose” and “opine”.

Maybe @fortris has logophobia?

fortris's avatar

2 more. By the way, I’m defining these, your not giving me answers to homework.

bythebay's avatar

@fortris: Good point about the definitions; get to work!

Adamantly is one I like.
Superfluous is another.

fortris's avatar

DONE! Thanks for all the answers.

SuperMouse's avatar

I hope that fortris will be benevolent enough to share which words were used and which were superfluous.

@dynamicduo – I LOVE the word superfluous!

What a verbose group of Flutherites. I applaud both your assiduousness and your acerbic humor!

Endemic to the question is a sense inquisitiveness which indicates a precocious and admirable adolescent.

It’s a bummer I’m not feeling more loquacious, otherwise I would have a lot more to add.

fortris's avatar

@supermouse I just turned it in, sorry.

fireside's avatar

Ok, well now that you have turned it in I can put this link. Check out the 4th option, it may help
But I am glad that you did it this way since it was fun.

fortris's avatar

@fireside Hahaha. I’ve never seen THAT before. I wanted to google it, but I wanted offbeat words, not standard ones.

I know you’ve already turned in your assignment, but I love vocabulary and I have to share two of my favorites.

lustrum = a period of five years
exascerbate = to make worse

I was going to say endoplasmic reticulum just because I love to say it. But that’s more of a science vocabulary word. And I don’t even remember what it is or what it does!

Dr_C's avatar

there are 3 varieties of endoplasmic reticuli…
rough endoplasmic reticulum (surface studded with ribosomes), smooth endoplasmic reticulum and sarcoplasmic reticulum.
They have specialized functions which include protein translation, folding and transport of proteins to be used in the cell membrane (e.g. transmembrane receptors and other integral membrane proteins), or to be secreted (exocytosed) from the cell (e.g. digestive enzymes); sequestration of calcium; and production and storage of glycogen, steroids, and other macromolecules.

aviona's avatar

…right! I remember that from bio…

If I make this post too long, it just might exacerbate the obfuscation.

I love that phrase

@SeventhSense, you’ve got the positive and the comparative—don’t forget the superlative:

fluth, fluther, fluthest

This question reminds me of when I was channel surfing and I was watching wrestlemania and the big tough “wrestler” was yelling at the guy, but one word that came out of his mouth was so complicated, and I cracked up. It was so obvious that it was scripted.
