Have you ever used hypnotism to achieve behavior modification?

Asked by Jeruba (56062points) March 18th, 2009

I’m not sure I believe in the possibility of really changing anything this way, although I can imagine short-term effects.

If you have any experience with this use of hypnotism, would you please tell what happened?

I went to a hypnotherapist for several sessions to deal with some severe grief. He taped every session and gave me the tapes to keep. I ended up sobbing uncontrollably after each hour. It felt safe but I was exhausted. If you want more detailed info, PM me. I was also going to a psychiatrist at the time and couldn’t afford both. It was interesting and cleansing, however.

A man I used to work with went to a hypnotist for help with quitting smoking. Every time he wanted a cigarette, he would rub his right elbow with his left hand. He said it worked, but I never quite believed him even though I didn’t catch him smoking.
