Negative Paypal balance?

Asked by seekingwolf (10410points) March 19th, 2009

So I sold an old phone on eBay for 300 dollars. A few months later, I got a chargeback from the woman who bought the phone, saying that it was an “unauthorized transaction” or something. It was stupid. I sent it to the address on her Paypal and she acknowledged that she received it. I disputed it with Paypal and the credit card company with proof of shipping, etc. But to no avail…

I am now -320 dollars in my Paypal and I can’t afford to pay them back. What should I do? I tried contacting them, but they were no help and were rude.

Should I just leave it be? I can change my bank account numbers so they can’t go into my bank account. I can’t pay but I don’t feel that I need to, as I did NOTHING wrong and gave them proof but nothing was done and now I’M in the hole.

What should I do? Am I going to get sued/have my credit ruined?

The process for a chargeback on paypal is sometimes very hard to dispute. The customer can basically say that they didn’t receive the product or they returned the product and you are liable to refund them. If you can show proof that you shipped them the item and it arrived at the destination and they did not return item or show proof of shipping then it can be ruled in your favor. The problem is when you ignore the claim or do nothing about it. My only response as a Powerseller on eBay is to always just take the return with no questions unless it violates the return policy terms. For example I sold a watch with some light wear that I described. I had good pictures and my return policy was clearly stated that it was 7 days if significantly different than described. He left me positive feedback and then a week later asked to return item. I pointed to my policy.
Had he not left me feedback I probably would taken the return regardless, but I felt pretty confident about that one. He just accepted. Even then if they insist, I will take it back because it’s not worth the negative feedback. You can avoid this by always describing items to a fault and take multiple pictures. But if Paypal ruled then you are liable, but maybe if you can find out more details and show that you shipped it you can get out of it. It depends on how much time has elapsed. Be proactive though by all means and don’t ignore it. Even if you don’t want to sell on eBay(which you won’t be able to until you clear it up) I would try to work out a payment plan with them before it goes into collection. Even if it’s 20 bucks a month. Good Luck

Yes, I showed shipping proof to them, and Paypal sided with me actually….and decided to dispute it with the credit card company. However, the card company didn’t side with us and Paypal is just like “oh well”.

I think I’m going to borrow some money from a good friend and pay him back. He’s already agreed to it. I’m always good about paying back a friend…plus, I’d rather have him getting on my case if I forget rather than the bank or a collection agency!

Did you ship with delivery confirmation? When I returned a item because it was not genuine, I had to ship it back certified ($25) and the seller had to verify he had gotten it before they would refund anything, can’t figure out why you are having trouble. Sorry.

I’ve only bought on eBay and in years past complained that the seller had too many advantages, boy did they change that! They swung it too far to the buyers advantage now, there has got to be a happy medium there somewhere.

Yep, I shipped it with delivery confirmation, with tracking number and EVERYTHING. I have no idea why they didn’t side with me because I was very prompt with providing them with the tracking # and responding to the dispute.

It’s obviously so skewed. Sellers need to protected too!

Does it have anything to do with using a credit card for payment rather than a paypal balance or bank account? I see that some sellers will not take a credit card through paypal, may be part of the problem?

I think when I get ready to sell it’s gonna be paypal cash or bank account, no credit card, no money order. I’m waiting for them to even the playing field a bit, will see.

@pekenoe

Nope, she paid via paypal…I believe she had transferred money in there from her credit card. The chargeback was done through paypal and she said that the credit card was used by someone else other than her. (yeah right!)

I would never take money orders or credit card purchases by themselves…paypal only. Too bad that it was paypal that screwed me over.

OK, but you can designate that buyers may not use a credit card to pay with paypal, they have to either have the cash in a paypal account or draw from a bank account. I think the credit card is what screwed you up??
Did you get the phone back?

@pekenoe

Nope, no phone…I never got it back. She ignored ALL of my emails and I know she has the phone, and now she has my money!

That @$$^#^ bi-atch.

Sorry for the crappy experience, should not be that way. I’ve been fortunate I guess, got screwed a long time ago on eBay but not since.

If you sell looks like we’re gonna have to take all the precautions we can to cover our butt till eBay n Paypal get the pendulum swung back a bit. Now I’m not looking forward to selling, maybe I’ll just have a yard sale :-)
