Snow Come Down by Lori Carson
Long Black Veil (I don’t know who sang it originally, I just know my dad recorded a cover of it with his little band)
I also like hammers and strings- jacks mannequin
Black by Pearl Jam
and
Last Kiss; again by Pearl Jam
Also: Nothing Came Out by the Moldy Peaches. There’s something about that song that just tugs at the heart strings, and I think everyone can relate to the sentiment.

hurt by NIN and Johnny Cash
Now Comes the Night

That damn Christmas Shoes song.
Give me back that Filet-O-Fish song from the McDonald’s tv commercial.
Christian Brothers by Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith in general breaks my heart.
Eric’s Song by Vienna Teng. Quality piano accompaniment makes me weep.
Where I Stood by Missy Higgins has been making me tear up lately.
The Live at VH1 version of Have You Seen Me Lately by Counting Crows. And Colorblind by them too.
It’s silly, but I find John Lennon’s Happy Christmas incredibly sad.
For me it was “Nikita” by Elton John, which is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard and meant a lot to me when I heard it (still living in a world divided by the Berlin Wall).
Today of course it has become obsolete, as millions of Nikitas have crossed the Iron Curtain to work in brothels in Amsterdam (and that’s the lucky ones). Which I guess makes it even sadder if you think about it.
“Follow you into the dark” by Death Cab for Cutie
“My Immortal” by Evenessence
Tears in Heaven
Angel by Sarah McLachlan
Some Devil on Dave Matthew’s solo CD of the same name. This song was featured in the movie 21 Grams, one of my favorite movies ever. Some of the saddest lyrics:
Feel heavy like floating… At the bottom of the sea
would you please by Rachael Yamagata
i vote waste of paint as the most heart-wrenching song i’ve heard in a long time.
