Is there a russian area in NYC?
Kind of like China Town or Little Italy or what ever. I want to know if there is a place in NY that is mostly russian? I will be visiting in a few days and since I study Russian thought It would be fun to hit up that part of town.

The Brighton Beach/Coney Island area has a high concentration of Russian people, but I wouldn’t necessarily equate it to China town. There are certainly signs in Russian and people speaking Russian (and reportedly, the Russian mob!).
Yeah, isn’t that the little odessa area? Was just reading about it on wikipedia some.
Yup. It’s not quite as in your face or tangible as it is in Chinatown, but there are restaurants and a bookstore and such. I’m sure people would be charmed to hear you speak Russian!
Yeah, thats what I wanna do is find some russian resteraunts and maybe pick up some books for kids that I can read and what not. And hopefully I can find some people who would like to put up with my intermediate comprehesion and ability in russian :D
Go to the St. Petersburg Bookstore on Brighton Beach Avenue. All kinds of great russian books, music, DVDs, etc. I go there every so often.
Actually, Brighton Beach is the rough equivalent of Chinatown, but just not as well known. The whole area of Coney Island and Bensonhurst (that region of Brooklyn) is majorly Russian. There’s a lot of banya’s and good restaurants.
There are a variety of good restaurants to choose from, from super fancy (a la The National, a mob restaurant) to Primorskiy (lit. By the Sea), which is Georgian, to markets that have sit down areas to try things like lamb’s tongue.
Let me know if you have other questions, I’m somewhat familiar with that area.
на здоровье!
