What's a good way to wake up in the morning?

Asked by Mtl_zack (6781points) March 21st, 2009

I’ve learned how to shut off the alarm in my sleep! Seriously. Now, my mom has to come wake me up, and she’s sick of it. Can you give me tips of how to wake up?

It sounds like you need that alarm clock that runs and hides so you have to find it to shut it off.

Or you could put your alarm clock across the room.

Don’t close your shades/ curtains at night. It’s harder to sleep in when the sunlight shines into your room.

I had the same problem of turning off my alarm in my sleep when I was in high school. I set my computer (which was across the room) to turn on music in iTunes as my alarm. (You can also do this with a CD alarm clock.) That way it was pleasant enough that I didn’t jump up, turn it off and get back into bed (which I always did with beeping alarms). You can listen to a song or two in bed (choose an album you like but can’t fall back asleep to! I used to like Green Day for this purpose) and then – voila! – you’ve been awake for ten minutes and it’s pretty easy to get (or stagger) out of bed.

(Also definitely try what @elijahsuicide said, I do that now and it’s a big help also.)

I used to wake up to music in the morning and it always got me up. The only problem is now there are some songs that make me twitch kind of oddly when I hear them.

@KatawaGrey Same, haha. There are some songs I’d wake up to for months on end, and now they remind me of whatever was going on in my life at the time. I get this weird sense of aural déja vu when I hear some of them, especially if they went straight from being my alarm to being rarely listened to.

Maybe find a reason, something to wake up for?

@fireinthepriory: Oh thank god! I just thought I was going mad. I woke up to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack for months before I changed it and now whenever I see the first movie, I get a rush of adrenaline in the beginning as if I’ve just woken up. It is a very disturbing feeling when you’re already awake…

Set your alarm clock an hour late, so now you’ll fly out of bed when in reality you have still got one hour to do everything you need before starting your day. It is a very eerie and singular atmosphere when you’re up awake and nobody else is…you have the world to yourself! Try! :D

Someone you love kissing you

@aviona
I agree, THAT’S the best way! Only problem with that, is the sudden urge to get the one that kisses you INTO be insted of the other way around…

There are two phenomenal alarm clocks out there and I’ll add a link once I find it. One alarm clock has wheels so that, after it goes off, it rolls off your night table and onto the floor and you can’t shut it unless you go after it.

Even better is the one with a “whirley bird” propeller that shoots in the air and flys all over the place and you can’t shut the alarm off unless you find it and put it on it’s base.

Here’s the propellar one:

The other is called a “clockey”:

@Mr_M oh man! I need that propeller one! Not only does it get you up, but it would force your adrenaline to get going and whatnot. Sweet.

Also, my grandfather has told me to wake up, lay in bed and just think about anything. I say the alphabet or do math problems or something. It’s the exact opposite of not being able to fall asleep because you can’t stop thinking. Once your brain gets going it’s harder to fall back asleep.

If you seriously make the affirmation before you fall asleep, ” I will wake up on time and feel refreshed”, will definately help assuming you weren’t out all night drink’in and stink’in.

I also suggest a “carbon-based” alarm clock, i.e., a dog or a cat. They know when you should be up and make sure you get up.

@Mr M is right, no question about it, get a fat cat that that wants to get fed-it’ll damn make sure you get up in the morning with the most provoking quirky loud obnoxious noises it can muster, or mechanically reproduce, and that’s after it has repeatedly trampled all over you.

The alarm clock I use is this one: Sonic Bomb – it’s not as loud as they claim, but loud enough, and the bed shaker works well when placed under the mattress where my pillow is. I still have to have the clock part far enough away that I need to actually sit up to reach the snooze button or I’d be back down before I start remembering anything (the cords (and my room) are not big enough to make it so I’d have to leave the bed entirely though).
