The Airplane Car looks like it will be ready for production after testing is complete.
I have two questions:
1. Do you think that the airplane car will become a standard mode of transportation in the future.
2. Would you personally consider driving/ flying one?

1. I hope not. Some people are bad enough at driving in two dimensions, and probably shouldn’t try tackling three.
2. With aviation and automobile industries in the crapper, I am not sure how a combination of the two would “fly,” so to speak. Especially since they appear to run on gasoline – which will probably not be as economical, once the recession turns around.
(And 3. No, I don’t think I’d want to drive one. I was up in a little two-seater plane once, and that was scary enough.)
We would need an infrastructure to support it. Our current aircraft control system would not be adequate. It’s an interesting concept. The sport pilot license does not have very stiff requirements.
The Moller Skycar, here and here seems to be about the best design going right now. I think it would be very fun to own one of these and I would very much consider owning and flying one. The website for the Moller Skycar can be found here.
As far as it being a main mode of transportation in the future, there would have to be all kinds of new training for drivers/flyers and new FAA rules and regulations implemented for this kind of travel because you’d end up sharing the same airspace with commercial and general aviation aircraft.
In a couple years if we listen to BACK TO THE FUTURE : )
No, I think The Tube will.
That’d be sweet if I needed to sell some drugs and dodge coppers.
nah. there is always prototype vehicles that never really make it into the general population. it is aimed at all the super rich who want a new toy.
(and they probably already have a pilot license, so it would not really involve more people in learning to fly a plane, just put more mini planes in the hands of the extremely wealthy)
but if i had the opportunity! i totally would!
If it’s as complicated to fly as an airplane, I doubt many people can afford the training or have the motivation to learn how. And if it flies high, wouldn’t people have to be trained to bail out with a parachute? I will PASS on that!
They had one that they started sell in 1949, the Aerocar. It wasn’t a very good plane or car so that’s why it failed.
I’ve seen this current one many times, even almost funded it, but I decided that if it failed once I don’t think it could catch on now, it looks pretty good overall but for 100K that would be a terrible airplane but who knows? It might be the new coolest thing.
