What is the best locally applied pain killer for tooth aches?

My friend is really suffering, and yes, we know a trip to the dentist is in order. For now, do you have any experience with those gels and solutions you apply to the tooth directly? Which one works best? We just got some orange “Orajel” solution, but that doesn’t seem to do anything.

Try dipping a q-tip in a small glass of Scotch, then apply to the tooth area (seriously). It works for many, including myself.
Orajel is pretty good.
I have an infected wisdom tooth right now and will be going in for emergency surgery tomorrow morning. Vicodin just takes the edge off, Orajel, numbs the shit out of it. :D
It doesn’t last more than an hour or so but it does help if you need to eat or talk. A lot.
I LOVE orajel. It is wonderful.
Clove oil works terrifically for temporary relief. The stuff dentists swab your gum line with to deaden it before they give you a shot is also made from clove oil.
@asmoneeeeeeeet !!!!
Sorry to hear that, I hope it won’t be too much of a drag for ya. She’s using the 20% Benzocaine solution from Orajel right now, says it numbs everything around it but not the pain itself. Might be the root canal I guess :(
@Mr_M I heard that too
@Ender
Yupp, that’s marathon man old school. Welcome to Fluther by the way ;)
Work it around the gums and the surrounding area, the numbness is unpleasant but better than the pain. I’m using the same one and it’s working for me, but I had to figure out how to best apply it for this kind of pain.
If it’s deep, put it on the palate, gums, and a bit of the surrounding cheek, that’s what I’m doing.
Can’t move my jaw much, but otherwise I should be fine by next week. I might try to Fluther when I get back form the dentist on happy drugs. :)
@TaoSan , they use it on babies, too.
P.S. She can expect a long, sleepless night ahead. Been there, done that.
I second clove oil. That’s good grandma wisdom!
In my opinion, Orajel is worthless. Get some stuff called OraBase. It has 20% benzocaine in it & it works way better than Orajel.
@asmonet That stuff just never did squat for me. Plus it tastes horrible. OraBase has no taste to it. Guess we’ll keep them both on the shelves.
I have used the juice of a hot pepper soaked onto a Q-tip with some success, but for cat’s sake, keep your tongue away from that spot if you know what’s good for you.
Capsaicin is a well known pain reliever.
We always use Anbesol for tooth aches, Oraljel for when you bite the inside of your mouth, or have a sore.
@evelyns_pet_zebra Most of that stuff, if you get it on your tongue, is almost worse than the toothache, ha.
just got some pure clove oil, that seems to do a little something, more than the Orajel so far. Side effect, whole house reeks of that stuff now, lol
@jbfletcherfan, that much is true, but what’s nice about the hot pepper burn is the endorphin rush it produces. Without that, I wouldn’t eat the damn things.
If the dentist has a call service, they can call in a prescription for something.
@laureth
Actually, it goes way past grandma, the Greek and Romans used it, along with smashed garlic.
Imagine that stench, lol
Cocaine works really well.
clove oil is what they used with my dry socket. it helped immensely. i could never find it at a store, even whole foods. i’ve heard tea tree oil can help..but you cannot swallow it at all.
@lemsteve
my dealer is out of town ;)
Welcome to Fluther
@TaoSan
Thanks. Also any of the lesser caines…lidocaine etc…
I suggest using ORAGEL or ANBESOL..
Just make sure if you use this local anesthetics to not drop or touch your tongue or lips. They can numb those areas too.. LOL speaking from experience
If worse comes to worst I would see my dentist.
@TaoSan: I’m sure Sakata can hook him up. ;P
@asmonet
loool
He could, but he’s too lazy to get off the couch and break something off, haha
Use @Mr_M ‘s advice, but also finish all the scotch once you’ve applied the swab to the tooth. Repeat. Repeat again. 3 glasses of scotch should do the trick. When your friend wakes up, take him to the dentist.
I agree with oil of clove. If you don’t have any on hand, just crush a whole cloove between your teeth and hold it there for a few seconds. (Intense flavor then…nothing!)
