What natural element do you believe is most comparable to humans?
We are surrounded by natural elements every day. Fire, water, earth, air, when encountering these entities on such a regular basis they can sometimes appear to display personality traits of their own, for that matter it is not uncommon for us to describe different sensations and observations via the application of terminology directly related to said elements (e.g. John was burning with rage). Do you think any of these element ‘personalities’ is similar to the general persona (‘demeanor’ if you prefer) of humanity?

Water. Our bodies are 60% water, roughly. It depends on the size of the person obviously.
because it destroys everything.
@A_Beaverhausen Interesting and perhaps you are correct; it should be noted however that when applied correctly fire is an extremely productive creature.
@evelyns_pet_zebra Meat is a natural element?
@Allies What you state is true (though i’m never entirely certain of the exact percentages, they seem to vary depending upon the source) but would you describe humans as flowing, elegant creatures who mix well with one another or do you think another element is better fitted to our disposition?
@Nially_Bob Flowing and elegant? Maybe for a few humans. For the most part, I think people blend together well.
oooh what great qeustion…!!! welcome @Nially_Bob !! Um… not sure… I think….we are probably all different.. I’m not sure we could lump humanity in one element… although if the all the elements were fused together… what would that make??? and how wicked would that be??? hmmm got me thinking…about this…brilliant brilliant brilliant question! well done you ! xx
p.s. today I am going to try and be….air… floaty, peaceful, light etc…
@Allie I like to think perhaps we are flowing and elegant only when together as one force, though perhaps that’s simply my warped perspective. I agree that humans generally blend together well and even the dirtier water that may not can be cleaned with ease.
@lynneblundell I’m pleased you like it but must state in honesty that I believe you need not make any effort to act similarly to air today as it is already evident that you are a lively and energetic soul; it’s very endearing. Your idea of all the elements being fused together is difficult to comprehend as they all affect one another differently keeping a sense of natural balance though perhaps that is indeed analogous to humanity? Incidentally the idea of a pile of sludgey burning mud held together by a ball of air is reminiscent of something that’s used as a weapon in some Japanese anime along the line.
@JellyB Always a pleasure to be amongst your presence JellyB my friend. Why do you believe earth is the natural element most readily comparable to humans?
:)!!
Well…when i was thinking of the elements, and earth is the first that came to mind. Maybe from the old saying – you come from the earth, and to the earth you shall return.
Maybe it’s also just a personal opinion… i think i am earthy, and i love earthy scents! I think we are part of nature, which is earth. That’s it! :)
@JellyB When thinking of the comparison between ourselves and earth my immediate thoughts relay to beliefs of the strength of human solidarity. Just as earth will crumble under pressure if there is not enough of it or it is too loosely bonded, humans cannot perform great feats alone lest they crumble, instead we must work together as a single unit. Perhaps I am contemplating this on too much of a societal level.
I’m inclined to say that a defining aspect of humanity is our ability to be any of these. We have the innate capacity, perhaps unique in the animal realm, to choose how we will respond to circumstances, We even have the ability to transform our own minds to a large extent. So perhaps we could say that to be confined to any one of these “elements” at all is to be less than human.
:)
Well, that makes sense too! I don’t really know how to put my feeling here into words…. :)
Well, I was looking at it from a literal point of view. We are natural beings, and like most creatures with a spine and a brain, we are made out of meat.
Makes more sense to me than comparing myself to fire, or water, or earth. Although, I guess when we die, we become earth again when the bacteria in the soil break us down into our component material.
What about the 5th element? The quintessence? Aether. Or maybe you could call it energy. I say we are definitely closest to this 5th element, whatever it is…
Ytterbium. Very shy and elusive.
Carbon through and through.
@the_force Any particular reasons why water?
@Harp Though I disagree with your remarks regarding our ability to choose how to respond in differing circumstances I also believe that to confine ourselves to any single ‘elemental comparison’ makes us incomplete.
@JellyB Should you meet a revelation when contemplating this topic in the future I would feel privileged if you would mention it here. Your view intrigues me.
@evelyns_pet_zebra Fair enough. I suppose all meat is basically a conjunction of natural elements anyway. Would I be unwise in assuming you to be strongly inclined towards the scientific approach to matters Evelyns my friend?
@Jiminez An interesting possibility. I have always considered energy, until applied, to be a ‘blank slate’ in that it has no purposes or traits and that it is only in it’s application (possibly through other elements) that such things can be garnered. Would you disagree?
@Grisson Humans are shy and elusive? Do you genuinely believe this Grisson and if so why may I inquire?
@Blondesjon There certainly are some diamonds amongst our species
I would have to say water… at its best and most useful, dynamic, adaptable and flowing. At its leats useful, frozen up.
OK, bad analogies but you get my point :)
