Know anyone who was prescribed Prozac for weight loss? How did they make out?

I recently found out that some doctors prescribe Prozac for weight loss. Does anyone have experience with this? What do you know about it?

Prozac for weight loss? Never even heard of it, but I’m currently on Prozac for other reasons, and have also noticed that it makes me lose my appetite and I’m not eating as much, so it might work!

I understand 80 mg/day is the dose for weight loss. Is that near what you take?

Prozac is also prescribed for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and I imagine, if a person is overeating compulsively, that would fix it.

In addition, I can remember a study which said if you address the depression of SMOKERS, they can quit more readily. Prozax is frequently prescribed for depression. I’m wondering if this is what it’s about or something else.

I’m on it for mainly depression. I actually think I take a lot less than 80mg/day, but I don’t have the bottle or any capsules with me so I can’t check. But even with the small dose I take I still notice a change in my appetite.

@Mr_M I’m sure (in fact i now for a fact) that prozac can help change many obsessive and compulsive behaviors…. and is great help with depression…. i also agree that many smokers are depressed…. or many depressed people are smokers… it doesn’t really matter in which order you say it… still you can’t generalize by stating something like “if you address the depression of SMOKERS, they can quit more readily.” because NOT ALL SMOKERS SUFFER DEPRESSION… and obviously not everyone with depression is a smoker.

C.O.S. you have no idea how much your avatar makes me laugh… too funny!

@Dr_C , my avatar is a gif. You should see it animated. It smokes and blinks.

What you say is true. I wasn’t clear. I was trying to speculate how Prozac might work with weight loss. In the study I vaguely recollect (obviously), these particular smokers were depressed and it was found that addressing their depression medicinally helped them stop smoking. Similarly, I know dieters frequently get depressed. I wondered if the Prozac worked on some people because it addressed the related depression if they were depressed.

I can even say it better (maybe). The smokers in the study smoked BECAUSE they were depressed. Addressing their depression medicinally helped them to quit smoking. I know a lot of people EAT when they’re depressed. I’m wondering if when the depression of THIS group was addressed, they were able to eat less.

I know i have a tendency to jump the gun and thas was not my intentio.. you are 100% right… i kinda have a soft spot for smokers.. and depression being a smoker myself and having had a bout of depresion a while back (not smoking related)...

And before anyone says it I KNOW THE IRONY OF A DOCTOR SMOKER…. i just choose to ignore it :p

80mg a day?! That surprises me, isn’t the highest dose 90mg? I know the weekly dose is a time release 90mg. I was on prozac once, and they had me at the highest dose possible, and decided to take me off because it just wasn’t working.
I don’t recall any loss of appetite though. It may work different for everyone.
