Why do new members avoid completing their profile information?

Asked by steve6 (2569points) March 24th, 2009

I look to understand someone’s question and there is no information on their profile. It is usually someone that has just joined. To those new members, please take a moment to jot down some stuff.

I wish I could tell you, I really do.

I don’t invest time or energy in a website until I find I like it. I don’t find that I like something until I try it awhile. Once I like it, I’m willing to invest more time and energy – and I’m also then more willing to share about myself. But not before.

Or maybe you were really just requesting that people go do this…?

Hahaha, that last bit Trustinglife. :)

I was here for a few months before I even added anything to my profile. Then, even when I added interests and hobbies and places I’ve lived, I didn’t add anything to the actual profile part (near your name where you write in stuff) until about a month or two ago.

fluther doesn’t ask for personal stuff like your social security number. It’s really not that hard or nosy. I feel those who have complied are more sincere and trustworthy with respect to the conversations we have on this site.

Testing the waters to see if they want to put that much effort into it?

steve6's avatar

Yes, how much effort does it take? Oh, I could have just completed one.

Steve, are you making a request, or sincerely wanting to know why people don’t do it? Sounds like a request an annoyed request to me. Just be straight about it. I wonder why I bothered to answer the question you asked.

DREW_R's avatar

I filled mine out and it isn’t showing up yet. Maybe they are being reviewed before being posted.

@Trustinglife No one’s talking to you. Sorry.

I just put links to my stuff because there’s a character limit to the description, and it’ll give you a better sense of who I am than me telling you guys what kind of person I want you to view me as.

@steve6 So much for trying to answer your question there. My bad.

@steve6 I thought when we asked questions here, we were talking to everybody. Maybe next time you should add in your details “Trustinglife need not apply” so he knows.

Filling out my profile was the first thing I did. Maybe that’s just me….

I filled out my profile like two or three months ago. I joined almost a year ago. I’m going to hide now so the angry mob can’t find me.

I’ve filled mine out, but I had to give it several tries before it would take all of what I added in. It was frustrating. I would add like 10 keywords, save, and only 1 or none of them took, even with the proper format.

DREW_R's avatar

@Michale I am gonna be spending more time with your sites and Gazebo. ;)

DREW_R's avatar

@Michale I think I shall make a site for us conservative. ;)

For me, a profile is mostly an afterthought until I get really invested in a website.
