Asked by jaramillo (12points) March 24th, 2009

Will exercise on the Wii Fit get the same results as exercising outside?

It works very well! One of my sisters got one, then another sister tried it and got her own. She has had Multiple Schlerosis for about 20 years and is degrading all the time. The Wii Fit has helped her to regain much of her balance and strength. My dad (74 years, post bypass surgery, lung cancer, etc.) tried it and started improving immediately. My siblings and I went in and got one for him and my mother. They’ve been using it for a few weeks and are doing great. I want to get my own to aid in my home yoga practice.

it can potentially help you develop balance and strength, but not necessarily get you “fit”. it is very motivational in some ways, but it does get boring after a while. we used it for about 2 or 3 weeks and just haven’t made time to keep up with it.

I think it’s great! It’s a fab way to try fun new ways to keep active.

I’m pretty well balanced, but it’s helped me maintain my yoga positions longer (I love competing with myself). And, gets my husband off the couch ;)

But now there are other workout programs you can buy for the Wii Fit balance board that WILL give you a workout. Check out Amazon. There’s one by trainer Julian Michaels.

yeah, just make sure you read the reviews on those games. i have read mixed reviews about the Julian Michaels game

i dont think the exercizes actually work… but it is mean to you if you dont lose any weight.
so i think as far as intimidation.. it works wonders.
haha

@ccatron It just depends on your motivation.

@ru2bz46 – i guess…. but to me, the games are geared more towards balance and strength. the aerobic games, aside from super hula aren’t very aerobic. sure there’s running, but i still have a hard time getting my pulse rate up unless i run fast, but then my feet hurt and my mii keeps falling down on the screen.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@ccatron you don’t get your heart rate up with boxing? Or tennis?

ru2bz46's avatar

@ccatron Yeah, I don’t get much aerobic out of it. Maybe a bit from boxing and tennis, like @SpatzieLover says. It’s good for indoor, low impact stuff like that. I get a pretty good heart rate going with Vinyasa yoga twice or more a week, so I don’t rely on the Fit for that.

I don’t personally use it, but I’ve heard nothing but great reviews about it from friends who use it. They say they really do break a sweat (provided you use it the right way and play for a decent amount of time) and over time, in addition to proper eating habits and controls, I’m sure you’ll be losing weight and getting fit in no time, as so many others already have.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@bobbyb_ It can become addictive and you can easily spend an hour or more “playing” and sweating. It’s great to play with kids on rainy days (like it is here today), too!

I bought the wii and the wii fit for the sole purpose of exercising and it’s fun and works if you do, unfortunately, not long after I bought the wii I discovered that I really liked racing cars and shooting zombies, etc.. Who knew? I was never a gamer. Now I don’t use the wii fit, I just play games. Road to hell, good intentions, you get the picture.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@lillycoyote ;) That’s why we ONLY bought “Fit” games…no others allowed!

Heck no, this is far from exercise!!!!!

I used the Wii Fit to supplement my exercise while I was in a 12 week weight loss/exercise program. I had two hour training sessions per week and the off days I would work 30 minutes to an hour on the Wii. The last four weeks I also did Jillian Michaels two days per week. I went from a Wii Fit age of 61 to 32 in 12 weeks. I lost 30 lb. and I know I couldn’t have done it without the Wii. The daily weigh-ins and strength training really helped! And my favorite game – the penguin on the ice -really did help me with balance at the gym.

In the end, it’s determination and willpower, but there’s nothing wrong with a little fun along the way.

I’ve lost 40 pounds using it

Wii fit, and anything for that matter, will work great for weight loss and general health as long as it gets your heart rate up adequately for an extended period of time, promotes coordination, and some strength training. The Wii Fit can definitely do this, but in my opinion is not the best option, but not a terrible option either.
