I think fluther.com deserves to have a Wikipedia entry, like wis.dm - Why hasn't anyone created an entry yet?
Actually, my intention was doing a background check when Fluther was first mentioned on wis.dm – To get a rough picture I think Wikipedia is a good place to start. I searched for “fluther” and got “Did you mean: further?”
Here’s the wis.dm entry (amazing how up to date the entries always are): link
Wis.dm (read “wisdom”) is a unique social networking website based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wis.dm revolves around user-submitted questions; members ask, answer, and discuss questions in a variety of specialized forums, called “scenes.” As of November, 2008, Wis.dm has over 70,000 registered users. On March 22, 2009, it was announced that wis.dm will be shut down permanently some time in the following weeks.
There’s even a reference like this:
Is wis.dm Your Next Web Obsession? from TIME Magazine Online
Now wis.dm turned out to be unsuccessful lacking performance and a viable business model which Fluther seems to have. Isn’t it time to become part of an online encyclopedia?

well, it seems time to make one, don’t you think?
I wrote and maintain wis.dm’s wiki article :P
So yeah, it’s pretty up-to-date.
Wonderful idea, mattbrowne. I do not know the answer. Why not?
I’d say go ahead and write one.
Askville has a Wikipedia entry, too, but I believe it resulted as a way to point out certain inequities associated with the suspension of the AV 16. Nonetheless, it is reasonably accurate, if somewhat biased.
BTW why is wis.dm shutting down?
Good suggestion. I would think Andrew and/or Ben would be the ones to write it. But I’m wondering if we want that much publicity. Do we? Just asking. I saw at least one interesting site close its doors because it grew too fast and couldn’t assimilate people fast enough, the moderators couldn’t maintain it, and the culture fell apart.
@Marina – Well, maybe Fluther doesn’t have many Wikipedia editors.
I am also curious about why wisdm is closing shoppe.
Wis.dm is shutting down because its owners supposedly did not have an effective way to maintain a profit.
If they figured the whole money-making thing out, would they bring the site back?
If they brought the site back would all the “wis.ers” leave?
If all the “wis.ers” leave would the rest of us feel an empty spot in our hearts?
If all of us feel an empty spot in our hearts would we resort to drugs and alcohol to dull the pain?
If we resorted to drugs and alcohol to dull the pain who would pay our rehab bill?
That’s the REAL question here. Who’s gonna pay for our rehab?
That’s a shame. It looks like a well designed layout.
@Sakata: Too funny. lol4r.
@Jeruba: Very good point. I like the grass-roots basis of Fluther.
@dalton It is for the most part. The site itself is fairly well designed except for the excessively slow loading times. The owner of the site was a get-rich-quick millionaire from the dot-com era. I’m not sure if he really knew how to run a successful website for an extended period of time.
As @marina hinted at, I was hesitant to add fluther to wiki simply for the influx it would bring. And besides, its andrew and ben’s bbq.
@Darwin—it just became to expensive to maintain. It started out pretty much like this, but then they did all of these “upgrades,” which were expensive….and which kind of messed up the fun so…
Fun? Weren’t we…? Who’s having…? Man, WTF am I missing out on?
@eponymoushipster Why didn’t you tell me there was a “fun” part? I blame you for everything.
@Allie do his tight blue pants have spangles on them??
@mattbrowne i dunno how much (if any) fluther gets from those Ts, other than advertising.
