What's a good topic that I can choose for my essay?

Asked by Mtl_zack (6781points) March 24th, 2009

I’m taking an archaeology class, and the essay part is 35% of the final grade. It has to be on any archaeological subject, that should be easy to research in academic articles.

I’m particularly interested in the Mediterranean area, and not so much Asia and the Americas. I need something specific, maybe something that was recently in the news that I can expand upon.

Well, once thing that I think is interesting is whether Akrotiri on Santorini could be Atlantis.

i think they find “essay” offensive. better play it safe and go with “mexican american”.

How long does this essay have to be?

Blondesjon's avatar

@Ivanabout 7 or 8 inches

i am sorry. it is a sickness. i need help.

Mtl_zack's avatar

@Ivan We’re doing it in parts. The introduction ha to be 2–3 pages, so I’m guessing the entire paper should be around 15–20 pages.

I see, so fairly long then. You will need something that’s not too obscure. You’ll need to be able to find enough info about it to cover that many pages. Specific is always better than broad however.

The excavations of Troy or Pompeii?

The amalgamation of the Etruscan and Latin peoples at the beginning of the Roman Kingdom (before the Republic)? OK, maybe it’s more like wholesale hostile takeover when one considers the rape of the Sabine women.

How about an interview with David H Koch in the Archaeology Magazine? Pick out some background material to fill it out.

The Minoan snake goddess.

As she appears in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

There are many renditions in statuary, and there is plenty of information about her online.

I was talking to my mother, who pointed out some things that are unique in every culture, including food, architecture, things that occur in everyday life, but you normally pass by. I remembered that the Greeks had a very complex drinking system called a symposium, so I’m drawing on that at the current moment. The only thing is, I worry if it’s too general. If I specify to the pottery used for different drinking tasks, or Dionysus and wine in religion, then it would be too specific and hard to research, so I emailed my teacher to help me in that regard. Thank you all for your ideas :D

I just finished my 11 page essay on the social implications of alcohol consumption and symposia in 5th century Athens. if there’s anything you need to know about this subject, don’t be afraid to ask LOL.
