Why does my monitor hum and buzz after I turn it on?

It’s a large Dell monitor, an old one, about 3.5 years old. Whenever I turn on my computer, or wake it up after it has been asleep, the monitor emits a loud buzzing sound. It seems like it’s coming from the connection with the plug, and when I fiddle with it manually, sometimes it stops. That’s annoying though.
What might be the source of the problem, and how do I make it stop?
