Is it a closed ring or an open ring?

A closed ring indicates that it was put on while the bird was a baby, while it would still fit over the foot. Breeders usually have their own identification system, but I don’t know of any registry.

An open ring indicates that it was an imported/wild caught bird that was processed through a quarantine facility. You can use those numbers to determine which facility it went through.

its closed rung. :D
Its a wonder why there is not a website that would have the information, obviously not his/her address but somehow some way of getting in touch with them.Even if the site posted information as to the status of a breeder i.e if they are a good place to get birds from or has someone had complaints about them.
I have a sneaky feeling i know the breeder but he never rings birds ( that i know of ) and all his birds are kept appalling conditions.

The band should carry some letters and numbers that will help make the identification:

example : LPP or 06 012
LPP = the aviary name ie: Little Parrot People
or = the state in which the bird was hatched
06 = the year that the bird was hatched
012 = the 12th bird hatched for that year

Mine says FL (for Florida) stamped from rim to rim. Then, on the horizontal direction it says DY (breeders name was David Young), and then 78, which I believe is the number of the clutch she came from. It is not the year she was hatched, as I know that was in July of 1995.

my canary is always biting at his, is there a way i can get his off?

His ring reads ” 3 GW 04 S”
not all rings come with the information you say VS. Because when i used to breed parrots my rings just had, numbers corresponding how many i had ordered i.e 1–10, my initials, the year and the size, the S on my parrots ring is the size of ring, where my owls ring is a size Z and reads “1 SMPB 03 Z ” and he wasnt the 1st born/hatched

@A_Beaverhausen Is your Canary’s ring plastic ?

It can be cut off, or pulled apart depending on the design. If its metal i would just leave it tho most canary rings would be plastic because of there thin legs.

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

plastic, yes. do you think its hurting him?

No all birds play with there ring even my owl does that.Rings are always half size too big so they can move and not cause bird any harm.Tho that does depend on the person who put the ring on the leg, as long as the ring can freely move i would leave it on.
The decision is yours i never rung my smaller birds ( Budgies, Finches and canaries)

@A Beaverhausen. Parrots hatched and raised in the United States, that is- captive bred companion birds, have closed bands. Wild caught, imported parrots have open bands. Ajax was raised by a professor who taught at the Gainsville (FL) Vet College, so she has a closed band.
