General Question

Is there always a favorable outcome possible in every situation, is there always a "perfect answer"?

Asked by gambitking (4206points) March 26th, 2009

On the rare occasion I get pulled over by a police officer, I can’t help but wish I knew exactly what key phrase or ass-kissing response would get me out of that ticket. But is there any hope in the first place? Or do I just simply lack the omniscience to the ‘perfect answer’ to every question?

I think when a cop pulls over a speeding driver and gives them a ticket, I think that IS a favorable outcome, to every OTHER driver and pedestrian on the street, to tell you the truth.

I don’t know about a “perfect answer”, but I suppose there is always the lesser of two evils.

I believe it could be argued that if you were speeding or ran a red light, the perfect outcome (from society’s viewpoint) would be that you get a ticket.

It is an interesting assumption that you think a favorable outcome will always be to your benefit.

There may be a perfect answer, but no one has it all the time.

I have it all the time. The only problem is that people doesn’t recognise it. Not a big deal though, I would be truly embarassed to have 1.433.343.348.999.111 lurve points, when Marina has only 15.652 (at present time).

There is often a better answer. However you do not always have the information necessary to determine what that answer is. As you work with imperfect information, you are left trying to determine the best answer when something you don’t know may be a huge factor in the situation. Life. It’s not as easy perfect information game theory.

Hardly ever.

I’ve found that if you’re friendly and courteous.. and readily admit what you did in a calm, composed almost self-deprecating way…. they wil USUALLY let you off with a warning.

The trick obviously is your attitude…. think of it as trying to sneak an extra slice of pizza… if someone catches you you kinda just smile and say “my bad” right? try being in that frame of mind while maintaining respect for the officer and again.. being friendly and smiling… just don’t over do it and try to flirt your way out of it…

In most situations, there’s a better outcome and a worse outcome. But the choices you and others make constrain the outcomes.

For instance, you’re driving. You can speed, or you can stay under the speed limit. If you choose to speed, you’re constraining the possible outcomes. If a cop pulls you over, the outcome of the trip is not going to be the same as it would have been if you had not been speeding.

Once you’ve been pulled over, it’s too late to wish you hadn’t been speeding.

Lurve for omniscience.

I think there is rarely a perfect answer for any given question or situation, except math maybe. We can only follow our instinct and hope for the best.

Livin’ on a Prayer just popped in my head. Somebody tell me why…

@essieness maybe because we’re halfway there?

@essieness: and we never find out what might have happened, if only we had done something else.

i think there is a best solution in all cases but it’s subjective.
if someone wants you to get a ticket.. then the best solution for them would be for you to get a ticket.
if someone wants you to get out of a ticket.. then the best solution for them would be for you to get out of the ticket.

is possible to get ABSOLUTELY whatever you want out of every situation? well, only by chance.. i mean.. i believe whatever can happen will and whatever can’t happen won’t. so, whether or not you’ll come up with that perfect excuse to the officer.. you only will if you can. but often times you won’t be able to, no matter what.

There is a perfect answer to every situation, but we don’t always know what it is. Perfect answers require perfect recall.

Sometimes the cop just has a quota to fill.

I would say there is absolutely not a perfect answer or better choice always.
That is where the saying “catch 22” or “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” comes in.
Sometimes we just have to trust our gut and there is no better choice. I would even go as far to say that perfection doesn’t exist.

It also depends on the results. Take this example:
A starving man can steal a loaf of bread and live, but be taken away from his family and sent to jail, or he can starve to death.

If the man choose to take the bread and he lives and no one catches him we think that is the better choice.
If the man takes takes the bread but gets caught and put in jail away from his family for 5 years then we think taking the bread is the poor choice.

Same with the cops. For each one there might be a response you could make but it would vary per cop and you wouldn’t have the information to know wether your comment would help or hurt the situation. Sometimes commenting might get you a bigger ticket.

Anyhow that is a long way of answering your question with a “No”. LOL

Can we ever hope for a perfect outcome in a universe as imperfect as our own? Can any one part hope to excel the deficiencies of the whole?
Granted, we may find solutions that are close to perfect, but as the old adage says, “There’s no such thing as a perfect solution.” I think Captain Kirk said that.
Or was it Mr. Spock?
