I need to travel and do something amazing. I'm trapped. Help set me free?

Asked by plasticpen (43points) March 26th, 2009 from iPhone

I have one semester of college left where I’ll get my degree in a vague liberal arts major that will probably amount to nothing, career-wise. I don’t want to move back home after I graduate. I have to get out of the USA…my urge to travel and connect with other people abroad is so strong it’s driving me insane.

I went to Israel a few years ago on birthright and had a blast, but that’s really the only traveling experience I have. But I loved traveling with a group and being social as I traveled. I have also we in some group volunteer travel programs within the US and had a blast.

I am basically chasing the “highs” that I got from these experiences and am looking for more. But I don’t even know where to start.

Does anyone have any suggestions for crazy and awesome things to do abroad when I graduate? I’m just looking for some really legit, respectable programs (that isn’t peacecorps or tefl) but other suggestions are welcome.

Get a job as a heavy equipment operator or a custodian with Raytheon Polar Services. Not only will you be making money, but you’ll get to spend 6 – 12 months in Antarctica (ask me all about it, I’ve been.), plus when you get off the ice you can travel all around New Zealand and the South Pacific. Win win (win).

Search for overseas jobs.

If your grades are good, apply to the Foreign Service. There are overseas volunteer groups (usually you have to pay your travel expenses).

Teach English as a foreign language overseas.

note: my grades are not good. but I will have a degree.

You don’t need super grades to drive a tractor in Antarctica! I think the requirement is a high school diploma.

If you speak another language, there are companies like Intrepid Travel that hire tour guides. And, Intrepid also has volunteer spots open.
You can find work with a large number of humanitarian organizations that need both employees and volunteers—Doctors without Borders, the UN, Conservation International, WWF—take your pick. Find a cause you can get behind and put in your application.
Good Luck!

If you want something outdoorsy look into NOLS. They have year/semester/and shorter excursions in the US and abroad.

In terms of places to visit on your own…I’ve been to Greece and Turkey and they were absolutely amazing. (plus going anywhere sans Euro at this point is nice).

I bet you’d have a blast anywhere in Central/South America. I’ve only been to Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

I know how you feel about being trapped, etc. So, good for you for realizing and it and getting out there!

I know habitat for humanity does a lot of work in other countries. Or similar organizations anyhow.
There are jobs too where you take tour groups to other countries. You can join a company that does this or start your own.
You can work in a travel agency or on a cruise liner.
You can be a flight attendant.
Oh here’s a good one. A friend of mine’s sister does this. You can Nanny abroad. They said her all over the world to nanny and she has a blast.
If you know someone to hook you up with it you can write a travel book or travel articles for a magazine/newspaper.
Here’s a good website: http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/work/careers/index.shtml

It’s not a long-term thing, but I would definitely recommend spending the month of August in Edinburgh, when the Fringe festival is in full swing. If you’re looking for work, there’s a ton of it during the Fringe (over 200 performance venues that hire extra staff for the month); you could also volunteer, or just hang out and soak up the atmosphere. However you decide to go about it, Edinburgh during the Fringe is amazing – it’s unlike anything else you’ll ever experience.

If you’re interested, check out the Fringe’s website. Also, if you go here, there’s a bunch of info about jobs, plus links to several other festivals that happen in Edinburgh at the same time (Jazz Festival, Book Festival, etc.), so you could work wherever suited your interests the best!
