they are offensive? I didn’t realize they were offensive. Of course, as a female, I only wear certain kinds of bras – I guess to not be offensive. :)

RedPowerLady's avatar

Good question! Female nipples have been sexualized by our culture and the media. That is why they are offensive because by showing a nipple we are showing “sex”. I think it’s ridiculous. And I think it is horrible that businesses or websites do not allow mothers to breastfeed or pictures of breastfeeding because it might show the nipple. This is completely contrary to human nature. And just because people want to sexualize the nipple does not make it more important than feeding a child. But that is another soapbox…

blastfamy's avatar

Does the “protection” instinct have anything to do with a primal instinct to protect a baby’s food source? That would explain the cover-it-up aspect. This, I guess, could be naturally extended to society going along with it and gradually tabooing the female breast, and in particular, the nipple…

Over the years, as other techs have come along, negating the need for protection, the societal sigma has remained in place, keeping the status quo of the case of the banned tit.

This would also explain why men have no reservations about nipps showing; nothing to protect, nothing to be ashamed of, nothing ever came of it…

I’d answer, but unfortunately, my answer is too good and original to give the rights away to fluther .

Vinifera7's avatar

What about man tits?

blastfamy's avatar

everybody, raise the number of times your original ideas have been unfairly, in your eyes, used by Fluther itself…

oh, and @RedPowerLady, I tend to agree, but with the reason for the sexualization of the breast coming from two spots. There is obviously a turn on associated with the whole ‘provide for my child’ role of the breast. Also, you could say that the taboo of the nipple has, itself, objectified the nipple as a target, making it that much more desirable by men…

cak's avatar

@RedPowerLady – I didn’t think an employer could say no to breastfeeding (if they can bring their child to work) at work. I was able to express milk at work, but I didn’t do it sitting in my office – too many windows. I did use a small conference room and no one ever said a word.

I agree with you, completely. It’s a part of the body that serves a very basic need – for mothers to feed their babies. why do men have nipples? They have been turned more into a sexual object and on that front, for some, they just can’t get past viewing them that way and not as something to help feed a baby.

@Halliburton_Shill, PLEASE SEND ME YOUR PAYPAL SO I CAN BUY YOUR RESPONSE. KTHXBAI.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@blastfamy That could be very true about the taboo causing it to be more desirable. Another reason to make it open and acceptable to see a women’s nipple especially when feeding: So there will be no taboo.
I do like the protection instinct theory. I’ll have to think on that some.

El_Cadejo's avatar

No one looks at a mans nipple and thinks its hot….

RedPowerLady's avatar

@cak I think it is supposed to be illegal but businesses have so much power and money they make it very difficult in some circumstances. I originally meant though women say breastfeeding at a restaurant or at say Walmart. So many women are asked to leave or to “cover up”. And sites like facebook won’t allow breastfeeding photos. Sad.

I think that is fabulous your workplace allowed you to breastfeed. Good for them!

I think it really says something about our culture that some people can’t get past the sexualization of the nipple. It’s so refreshing to hear from someone who gets it!!!!

And why do men have nipples???

kevbo's avatar

Unhairy nippes are disgusting.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@uberbatman Haha so true!

Edit to add: or anyhow I was thinking of this in terms of a joke

kenmc's avatar

@uberbatman Cultural positioning at work.

Also, I would bet that’s not true.

blastfamy's avatar

@RedPowerLady, are you in the US, or abroad?

I’m pretty sure that the US is among the only places (zB Iran) where a woman is more covered up (the reason notwithstanding).

That said, what are other Jelly’s experiences with nudity in the public view in other countries?

cak's avatar

@RedPowerLady – Ok, I understand…it’s getting late, I’m a little slow! America is behind on how they look at breastfeeding women, in public. I think what disturbs me the most is when women look at it in a “dirty” way. They think it should be hidden.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@blastfamy I am in the US (Oregon)

Are other countries more liberal with this issue??

RedPowerLady's avatar

@cak

Quote: “I think what disturbs me the most is when women look at it in a “dirty” way. They think it should be hidden.”

I SO Agree!!!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@boots My apologies for taking over the thread with the breastfeeding example. I’m not sure if that is proper netiquette or poor netiquette.

cak's avatar

@RedPowerLady – yes – most European countries don’t even bat an eyelash at a breastfeeding mother. You are more likely to see women breastfeeding older children – not just newborns. (3+)

cak's avatar

@boots – yes, I apologize for the thread hijack – it is a good question! lurve to you for the good question!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@cak That is fantastic! I had no idea other countries were so much more progressive on this issue. The fact that it isn’t as taboo and that mothers feed their children longer is like music to my ears.

Vinifera7's avatar

Yes, Americans have a paranoid fascination about skin.

kenmc's avatar

@cak I don’t worry about such frivolity. Conversation goes where it goes for a reason.

kenmc's avatar

@RedPowerLady No worries. Conversation goes where it goes for a reason.

hug_of_war's avatar

Female nipples scare me. I’m glad they are not exposed.

kheredia's avatar

Its all a culture thing! We are taught to be offended by female nudity but other places find it beautiful. I don’t think its a big deal.

kenmc's avatar

@hug_of_war DON’T LOOK IN ANY MIRRORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bewbs are everywhere.

@kheredia Exactly. We’re taught that it’s wrong, so we believe that it’s wrong. That doesn’t make it so.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

I don’t really understand the sexualization of breasts. But then again, I am gay. ;)

kenmc's avatar

@Dansedescygnes Well, being gay, can you understand the sexualisation of pectorals? It’d be about the same thing.

asmonet's avatar

History, and prejudice. Not that big of a riddle really.

kenmc's avatar

@asmonet Why would that history affect today’s outcome, then?

Also, fuck prejudice!

VzzBzz's avatar

Offensive, no. Erotic- supposedly.

kenmc's avatar

@VzzBzz Well why couldn’t all nipples be erotic then? :-?

dearest_prudence's avatar

I don’t think mine are offensive, neither does my s/o

VzzBzz's avatar

@boots: I see male and female nipples as very erotic but most people I know only get turned on by women’s. One of my bf’s made me turn all shades of red when he pushed his tie aside, opened a few middle buttons of his shirt and showed me a tat above his heart. I didn’t see the tat so much as his man nip and the texture of his skin. wow.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

I don’t think it’s a matter of being offensive. Maybe it’s more about regarding something with reverence.

jo_with_no_space's avatar

I have wondered this for such a very long time. Double standards, much? The culture makes a certain bodily part the objet de desir and then chastises those who own said body part.

Drawkward's avatar

Maybe offensiveness has got somefrink to do with the usefulness of the body part? Females have the whole breastfeeding, and the male ones are just kind of leftovers.

wundayatta's avatar

See, the thing is, female nipples just curse like soldiers, whereas male nipple are prim and proper like a proverbial schoolmarm. Which one do you think is more offensive? Huh?

SeventhSense's avatar

@boots
Because they feed children, provide sustenance, allow a mother to bond with her child, feel empowered, and reminds men how important women are…we can’t have that. :)

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@boots

Not exactly, though. I think a man’s chest can be attractive, but it isn’t like looking at some sexual organ that should be covered up. Looking at a woman’s breasts is like looking at a penis. Looking at a man’s pecs is like looking at their legs or something…it’s not the same degree of sexualization; it has more to do with the whole body being sexy.

This is just how I see it.

kenmc's avatar

@Dansedescygnes Boobs aren’t sex organs.

btw, I hope I didn’t come off sounding bigoted above…

SeventhSense's avatar

@boots
No you didn’t. Jump right in.
@Dansedescygnes
Teenage hormones aside, looking at a woman’s breasts is not akin to looking at a man’s penis. Yes they both ejaculate a whitish fluid but there the similarities end. We don’t dine at the penis…well at least I don’t.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@boots

No, they are not sex organs. That’s what I’m saying. People act like they are. If they didn’t, then it wouldn’t be censored when a girl removes her top. It’s not quite as strong as looking at a vagina or penis, but it much stronger than looking at a man’s chest.

What I’m saying is I am not as turned on by looking at a man’s chest as a straight man would be looking at a girl’s breasts. Most of them, at least. I’ve heard some straight men profess not as much attraction to breasts as the average straight man.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I got your point and I think that it is spot on. It’s just not quite the same. And the degree of sexualization put onto a women’s breast is well too high.

@SeventhSense “We don’t dine at the penis…well at least I don’t.” Loving that quote!!!

ShauneP82's avatar

They don’t offend me! Ladies if you are ever in the area and you feel like letting it all hang out, be my guest. In addition, I have seen some pretty offensive male nipples. lol.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

I cannot comprehend how something of exquisite beauty can be considered offensive. It probably dates back to times when women were considered the property of their husbands; the “owner not wanting other men to see.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. The nipple I suspect got highly demonized in colonial America. Native people never really had a problem with it –but then again, they were considered uncultured Godless heathens. When civilized man who had his culture steeped deep in Judea Christian ethic started to see the breast as sexual something had to be done to make the breast be less like….breast. I guess without nipples breast would be like unattractive Barbie breast, just lumps. With a nipple they were more human and thus lust inducing. That is why women who do not need a bra wear one so that “bullets” don’t show under the clothes because the shape in its natural state is about as bad as seeing an actual naked booby. That is my best guess.

Exitor98's avatar

That’s a good question. I guess it’s due to how we sexualize females breasts because, lets face it, they’re much prettier.
