"Earth Hour" scheduled for 8:30 PM-9:30 PM tomorrow, Is it the same time in every time zone?

Asked by Mr_M (7624points) March 27th, 2009

If it is, then it’s not going to be the entire planet that goes dark at once? What can you tell me?

From what I understand, it is 8:30 in your time zone. So no. If you were an alien, there would be swatches of earth that would go dark, one at time.

I looked it up, it doesn’t give a time zone. It’ll be different for everyone.
Since it’ll be different for everyone, I might do it earlier, I need light to take care of my little one haha

From what I understand, it wastes electricity if everyone does it. Because an hour is not enough time to respond to the lack of demand and produce less, so they make the same amount and some is not used. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I don’t actually know a lot about our grid and how electricity is made.

Anyway, if that is true it would be better if it was in your zone because then some of the otherwise wasted energy in some areas is still being used. Because that stuff doesn’t cut off at the end of a time zone, you know. And that would be a good reason not to make earth go dark at once.

Or am I totally off base?

Sounds like the planet will be doing the wave.

@EmpressPixie ,electricity is made by flying a kite with a key attached (or something like that).

It says on the television here, turn off at8:30pm – 9:30pm . I am in Scotland

Mr_M's avatar

Gee! Then NY and Scotland must be in the same time zone!

why doesn’t everyone just switch everything off for an hour at night, like say when you go to bed then you can save the planet even more. As your lights will be off for longer

Mr_M's avatar

Now that you mention it…... I think most people already DO. We don’t need an Earth Hour!

Sounds like a silly gimmick to me, like the don’t-buy-gas-for-24-hours idea that surfaced a few years back. I’ll tell you what, for every light that you turn off, I’ll turn on two.

@Poser youd be surprised at how much money one can save by just turning the lights off for one hour. When the Wii came out, i camped outside walmart the night before waiting for it. Well at exactly 2am all the night shift people took their break and all the lights went off on the walmart. Evidently by turning the lights off for that one hour every night it was able to save the company a lot of money. Now i know this is over a long period of time that it builds up, but we’re talking about all of the earth doing the same thing on one day. Im sure it has an impact.

@EmpressPixie

The power companies won’t be shutting off their grids. So it won’t be wasting electricity. If they were then it would have a negligible impact. Because it takes so much power to turn off and on the power grid. And in all honesty the impact by us on energy will be negligible but not wasting.

The point of EarthHour as I understand it is to make a statement that, we the people, are concerned about energy. They will be using the numbers of people involved in EarthHour to convince the International Copehagen Climate Conference that we need to make steps with concerns to energy. Basically it is an International statement saying we need to do something.

@Mr_M Yes it is in your time zone. Don’t know why they are doing it that way, probably for ease of advertising.

wow…I’m so disappointed that i’ve only found out about this now…. I don’t know if i have enough time to tell all my family about it… i think this is great! And i will be doing it!

nebule's avatar

do we have to turn off ALL our electricity??
that would be sensible wouldn’t it… surely it’s not just…lights???

RedPowerLady's avatar

@lynneblundell The idea is to turn off all your electricity. But they just ask for lights for those people who grudgingly do it. We are going to even unplug everything from the wall that we leave plugged in when not using like the TV and Coffeepot along with turning off all our electrical appliances including lights. I heard that is what most people are doing

@RedPowerLady thank you for the clarity!!! I’m off to sort candles out…and to bath my son!! xx

@lynneblundell You are more than welcome!
