In what ways are you hypocritical?
I was thinking about The_Compassionate_Heretic’s question about what we’re doing to be more environmentally friendly. I was thinking I was doing an ok job of being “green,” then started laughing at myself because I was thinking about this while taking a very long hot bath (followed by a long hot shower) and having a cigarette, which I proceeded to flush down the toilet (and realized it needed to be cleaned with the very un-environmentally friendly Scrubbing Bubbles).
And that got me thinking about other ways I’m hypocritical… how about you guys? Do you consider your personal hypocrisy just a quirk, or is it something you should work on? I know we can’t be perfect people…

Oh, and to add…
I know not doing EVERYTHING doesn’t make you a hypocrite. I believe being earth friendly is hugely important, and I talk about it a lot. That’s the hypocritical part.
Environment, for one. Working on it.
I believe that everyone is a hypocrite. The only difference is some admit it while other will not. In our minds, we can imagine ways to be perfect, to live up to our every ideal, but the actuality is not always as simple or convenient as we imagine. I try to do what I can, and I do more than most people I know, but I still throw things away that are recyclable, and I leave the lights and air conditioning on (when it’s hot) for the cats. Like you said, we can’t do everything, but I feel like I do enough to offset the harm I cause. And anyway, we can never know how our present actions will effect the future. We could be doing more harm than good.
Don’t crucify yourself, just do more. Buy the green products, make an effort to produce less trash, change out some light bulbs and turn off the lights. Just doing those 4 things will make a huge difference.
If you visit the Simon Weisenthal Center in L.A. – you can choose to enter via one of two doors: one has a sign that says “Racists” and the other “Not Racist”. The latter is locked.
I define hypocrisy not as failure to do something that we believe to be good (that’s perfection), but failure to hold ourselves to the same standards we hold others. In that way, I don’t believe I’m hypocritical.
@Zen oooh. Interesting. I bet that gives people a lot to think about!
Well, I definitely question sometimes my desire to share as much about my thoughts with others as I do. It seems to be a fine line between being sharing my thoughts about humility and being too proud of my beliefs. But I like to think that I am willing to understand and process other people’s beliefs too.
@Likeradar It is the museum of intolerance, and the whole tour shows you how basically we are all racist in one way or another – even those who do not realize it.
@Zen: The Weisenthal museum is an incredible experience, yes!
@Likeradar: I’m a hypocrite in that I look down on adultery yet I’ve committed it in my mind and in my writings, I can’t count how many times.
I think if I was aware of every way in which I’m a hypocrit, I’d be a hypocrit about fewer things. Arrgg!
Nutrition and health, for one. I eat cookies, smoke weed, chug beer, and bum cigarettes from time to time, yet I give advice about proper eating and exercise. I know what I should be doing, but I don’t always practice it.
everyone has a hyprocritical sense about them, I think it’s mostly because we all have an easier time looking outwards than looking in. It’s easy to say this person is ignorant or that person is, but often we say so without really looking at ourselves from their perspective.
@VzzBzz
it’s ok if it’s just in ur mind, vzz. ;-)
I am an exceptional hypocrite. @tinyfaery is 100% right. We are all hypocrites in one way or another and I am your King.
@KalWest: there’s a very thin line sometimes and it has frightened me at times.
