What are your thoughts about using a different fluther identity for really personal questions?

Asked by YARNLADY (46587points) March 28th, 2009

If you don’t want people to make value judgments about your primary identity, does using a different one and admitting it help, or would it be better to just keep it to yourself?

I’m pro 2nd identity. Sometimes you really need advice and you don’t need others to know it’s for you. It also avoids them coloring their answer in a certain way because they know you.

Yes- one of these days I will do it as I have a question that is of a sensitive nature.
The mods will know it is me by my IP but I am good with that.

i think it’s a good thing. certain things are private.

As long as you’re not using it for nefarious reason (gaming the lurve system, for example) then a second account is perfectly acceptable by the gods of Fluther.

Sounds like anonymouse before it got used by a bunch of jerks. It was a great account to use to ask personal questions that you didn’t want to ask under your own account.

VzzBzz's avatar

I don’t think it should be a problem as long as the second identity isn’t created to leave “Mr. Hyde” style comments to other members.

VzzBzz's avatar

@Yarnlady: I got to a point elsewhere online that because I knew particular people IRL that there were certain questions I wouldn’t answer even though I wanted to or felt I had something important to add.

If I need to go the anonymity route here on Fluther, I just end up borrowing an existing member’s identity for a short time. It’s easier than having to create a second account.

YARNLADY's avatar

@Bluefreedom So if I see people making comments to me about questions I never asked, I’ll know it was you? How does that work?

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Yarnlady. I’m hesitant to explain the process exactly because my methods are rather unscrupulous and I don’t want to get on anyone’s bad side here. ~

I suppose it has its place, and I may keep it in mind, because I have a couple of questions I have yet figured out the best way to ask.

augustlan's avatar

As soon as I get around to it, I’ll be making another account for asking and answering certain questions. My children are members here. ;)

Dog's avatar

@augustlan Yeah- my spouse drops in so I too must be under the radar grin

YARNLADY's avatar

@augustlan I understand that. I lost one of my favorite sites when my daughter-in-law discovered I was talking about her. So far none of my family knows about this one – I hope.

casheroo's avatar

I see nothing wrong with it, because certain things you may just not want your friends on fluther to know. Some things are personal. As long as you don’t abuse it, I don’t see the issue.

AstroChuck's avatar

@augustlan- Its going to be fun trying to figure out which newbie is youbee, Auggie Doggie.

I don’t think I could ask really embarrassing questions or answer really embarrassing questions under a different name. The whole point of being daloon is that I let it all hang out. Daloon’s reputation is that he tries to make sure there is nothing he won’t answer, and reveal his own personal experiences with.

The puppet master behind daloon is actually a little jealous of daloon. He wishes he could be like daloon, but thinks that real life has so many more consquences. Of course, no one who know’s daloon’s puppetmaster in real life, know’s that he is daloon here, and daloon’s puppetmaster plans to keep it that way.

Now, if you had people here who knew who you were in real life, I can totally see the use of another alias here.

AstroChuck's avatar

@daloon- Yeah, but what would rancid say?

augustlan's avatar

It’s interesting. I just answered the abortion question (asked under someone’s alias) truthfully, under my own name. My children are aware of this episode in my past… after all they are all teen or tween girls, so I consider it vital to share my experience in this area with them. I also have no fear of anyone judging me for my honesty here. I think it really helps people to know that I’ve been there.

About the only things I won’t answer due to my children’s presence are the very personal sex questions. That is what I need the alias for. ;-)

AstroChuck's avatar

Ooh. But you’ll tell me though, right?

RedPowerLady's avatar

I think it’s okay to do it. Safety first is my motto. And it doesn’t bother me that others do it. I think it’s especially nice when people are open about having two accounts. Not that you know which two, lol.

augustlan's avatar

@AstroChuck We’ll see… how good are you with pancakes?

wundayatta's avatar

@AstroChuck: Rancid is a sneak and he doesn’t speak English very well, and he generally takes a more negative view on life (if that were possible). I don’t think he’ll show his face around here.

AstroChuck's avatar

Oh, man. And I added him to my fluther and everything.

wundayatta's avatar

@AstroChuck; You did not!

OMG, like, I can’t believe you did that!

frdelrosario's avatar

What a good idea. I’ve only been here for a day, and there are several questions for which I should prefer to use an alternate ID.

asmonet's avatar

Psst, Auggie. You know I make delicious pancakes. ;)

Mo, you are in.
