I think the kinds of coding that are needed to create those peer-server-peer, real time, auto-archiving updates is fairly complicated. So before plunging in, I’d ask what are you trying to do that’s new or different from what’s already out there?

Yes. Social networking software exists that you can purchase. For example, Konsort by PHPFox, whose website I designed. Theirs is a $300 one-time fee. There are others as well, even free, open-source ones. Search google.
I recently found social networking software from Boonex that could do a lot of what you are looking for, but I haven’t set it up yet to try it out.
