Do any of you use marijuana medicinally?

Asked by essieness (7703points) March 29th, 2009

I’m not looking for a debate about whether or not it should be legal.

A lot of you know I have Addison’s disease. The symptoms of an Addisonian crisis are triggered by physical and emotional stress. While I enjoy smoking pot anyway, I genuinely do use it to reduce my stress. A also have many days where I have trouble eating. I feel hungry, but nothing sounds good or actually eating makes me feel nauseous. Today is one of those days. I find taking a couple hits from my pipe increases my appetite and reduces my nausea.

Among all you potheads, do any of you use it for it’s medicinal purposes, even if that’s not the main reason you smoke?

Hey essieness. I have Intracranial Hypertension… basically false brain tumor. It sounds way more scarier than it is. It causes extreme pressure on my brain and eyes and that causes crazy migraines. I have, in the past, used pot to help with the pain. But due to adult onset asthma I can no longer do this…. bummer.

Yeah…uh…medically.

I used to lie to myself and say that it helped to keep me more calm and balanced.
But now that I have quit, I realize that was a misconception.

The only biological difference I have noticed is that it may take a little longer to get to sleep.

I’ve used it a few times to ease menstrual pain.
Several highly stressed people I know cannot ease to sit down and eat until they smoke a little, they do it to be able to sleep also.
Have you tried any acupuncture yet?

essieness's avatar

@VzzBzz No, I haven’t. I don’t have insurance right now (is acupunture covered by insurance?), so I stick to smoking.

@essieness – the bud I was smoking cost as much as acupuncture anyways. And the effects didn’t last much longer.

essieness's avatar

@fireside Interesting. I’ll have to look into it. Not that I’ll stop smoking… ;)

@essieness – yeah, I was the same way. hope you find something that works for you either way.

I qualify for it due to my conditions but my state thinks such actions are illegal. Yeah, I live in a backassed red state.

@Kraken Welcome to the club.

@essieness: When I had Kaiser and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, they did cover it, I paid something like $10. or $15. a visit. In my new state and with no health insurance, I visit the local acupuncture school where they charge less than $40. for a visit. Just a little tune up every few months but it keeps me off pain meds.

@essieness Medical marijuana is important and many of us can be helped by it. When I smoked the stuff in the past, I noticed that certain kinds of bud effected me differently. It is also important to find out what strain is best for you to use too.

I initially smoked it to help me sleep. Lately it has led to deep introspective thought. This has helped me recognize many of my life problems while finding solutions to them. It helped me though a rut that I have been in for the better part of a decade.

My ex brother in law smokes it for his glaucoma. It’s the only thing that relieves the pain. It relieves the pressure in his eyes so it’s keeping his optic nerve from being damaged even worse. If it weren’t for weed, he might be totally blind by now.

Not legally, but I do smoke sometimes when I’m feeling sick…it calms my nausea. It helps with cramps.
I think it should be given out medicinally more often.

asmonet's avatar

It has helped me with nausea, I don’t smoke anymore – not really. I don’t have the money for it, or the inclination at the moment, though that comes and goes. I do however, always keep some on hand for migraines.

You spend a week popping hardcore prescription painkillers in a room with no light and no sound and nothing works until you take one puff off your pipe….kinda convinces you.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@asmonet I never thought about marijuana being used for migraines. Interesting.

asmonet's avatar

It’s a miracle drug for my migraines, I turned a friend on to it for treatment because hers were debilitating and frequent. Now, she swears by it.

I smoke to slow my thoughts enough to sleep. I have been written prescriptions for insomnia medication and tried everything without success. You know that I believe that weed is a wonder drug.

jonsblond's avatar

It helps with my migraines, PMS and it helps me sleep soundly. How can that be bad?

Triiiple's avatar

I have trouble sleeping, i dont like hard labor or responsibility. I like to relish in the fact that its the marijuana holding me back and not myself.

Yeah medicinal.

alossforwords's avatar

@Triiiple You shouldn’t let it hold you back. Everything in moderation. I know from personal experience that it is possible to smoke and still keep a 4.0 in college while working two jobs and running your own website.
