I used “The Hero With a Thousand Faces” for a paper I wrote last year. Pretty good book.
I saw a show on PBS where he talked about following your bliss and in doing so we would reach our true self.
I would have enjoyed being in his class. I was sorry to hear that he passed away.
I’m sorry I haven’t read any of his works.
I was at Sarah Lawrence College in his last years of teaching there. I heard him lecture once and tried to get in to his Senior seminar as a Junior (it was his last year before retirement.) He was a magical speaker and the Bill Moyers series with him captures his encyclpedic knowledge of world mythology, his ability to synthesize and his humanity (even though he didn’t let me into his course.)
@janbb :0 <<this is my “omg i’m so jealous that you went to sarah lawrence” face. :)
Wow, you actually heard him speak. I am truly jealous as well. Yes, I think everyone could benefit in their way of understanding if they read his work.
@adreamofautumn I know; I am a very lucky girl. It was a great place to learn how to think (and eat pizza late at night.)
I’ve dabbled in his written work, but I took the Joseph Campbell workshop at Esalen the year after he died. It was very influential in my life, my creativity, and my thinking.
Yes, I’ve read several of his book including “The Masks of God” series a few times over.
The founding curator of his archives and library, Jonathan Young, gives West Coast workshops on story and myth, drawing heavily on Campbell’s material. I have attended several and am registered for another in June. Here is his organization’s website.
I haven’t read “Hero” in a long time, but I have the Bill Moyers DVD series with Campbell that i pop in from time to time.
