I don’t think that human nature can have either behavior or attitudes. Try to be more precise or specific. Give an example or two. Do you mean, for example, “are most men programmed to be aggressive or are women nurturers and caregivers”?

I do not attribute anything to “human nature” because as humans we are intelligent enough and capable in overriding our default programming. I find attributing things to “human nature” is often just making excuses for certain behaviour.

It’s human nature to wonder about our own nature.

@dynamicduo : I disagree. I think, more often than not, we just behave like animals, albeit smarter, and 99% of what we do is just learned reflex

@upholstry would you care to illustrate your viewpoint with examples?

My counterpoint would be examining the way I behave. I don’t behave like an animal. I don’t poop on the floor or screech at people. Most of what I do is certainly not learned reflex (beyond breathing and moving of course), it requires years of dedication and learning and effort and problem solving. I’m afraid without further clarification of your claim, I am forced to disagree with it.

@dynamicduo you go to the bathroom in a toilet, because you’ve learned it and repeated that action thousands of times. Same with reading or using a computer.

A mouse can press a button for food. Using a computer is the same thing, but on a grander scale. Your brain and fingers ‘learn’ how to transfer thoughts into keystrokes and it becomes more or less reflexive.

I am not saying that we’re animals like dogs, but just that we aren’t as ‘in control’ as we think we are. When we aren’t actually being ‘constructive’ or ‘creative’, we’re just going through the same pre-set motions day after day. And even when we think we’re being creative, like when we’re writing or painting, etc, we’re just going through the same motions.

So what I mean by ‘human nature’ I suppose, is that humans pretty much follow predictable biological patterns like every other animal does.

@upholstry I don’t go to the bathroom in a toilet because I’ve been conditioned to, as you illustrate with your mouse pressing for food example, I do it because I believe it is a more sanitary way to dispose of my waste.

As well, I hardly think I am following any motions when I am being creative. My creativity goes from point A to point B then doubles back and changes something, etc. I cannot see how this is “following the motions” at all.

I see that we differ in opinion.
