well take in to account what you need to raise any dog
Food- think about how much he/she will eat, and how long a bag of food will last and what kind of food you will feed them, are you going to buy the more expensive name brand or the generic food.
Health- you need to take it to the vet, make sure you it has all its shots and heartworm medicine. You also need to think about flea medicine, are you going to give it flea treatments or just put a flea collar on the dog. You have to think about if the dog gets sick what it will cost to get them better, and if it’s the 1st year you have the dog you might want to consider getting him/her fixed and how much that will cost
Supplies- are you going to buy the dog toys? They will also need to have a leash and collar and name tags (or a chip)
You also need to think about if you go out of town, what are you going to do with the dog, take it to a kennel, have a neighbor watch it or just leave enough food for them in the yard.
and also you might have to pay to have the dog (I know where I live you have to register your pet and pay a early fee not sure if this is true everywhere or just where I live)
Here is my approximation. But it is no different from any other dog.
Approximately 500.00 yearly MINIMAL.
20.00$ a month for food = 240.00 yearly
10.00$ a month for a chew toy (absolutely necessary) = 120.00 yearly
5.00$ a month for dog treats (useful for training and such) = 60.00 yearly
10.00$ every 6 months for nail clipping = 20.00 yearly
50.00 (estimate) for a vet check-up once a year if nothing goes wrong = 50.00 yearly
Also possibly need flea/tick treatments which are 20.00 each and last between 1 and 3 months.
If you want to do start up fees it is about 100.00 for shots and another 150.00 for spay/neutering. And about 25.00 for proper licensing. As well as about 50.00–100.00 for start up items such as dog bowls, leash, harness, etc…
Note: I am new to dog owning but am basing these estimates on what we spend for our dog. Please other users correct my figures and add others if I have missed something or got something wrong. I will not be offended at all.
I have a large pit bull -The breed itself is not going to add to your cost. The size definitely, the dogs health, and how much you want to take the dog to the groomers and vet versus doing it yourself. Also, the quality of food, etc. @RedPowerLady is right on with costs – though there will be variation. Here’s my personal breakdown on our dog.
Here’s what I spend:
*$50.00 a month on dog food (grain-free dog food as my pup is allergic to wheat and rice and he’s a big guy so eats a lot) = 600.00 yearly
*$30.00 every 3 months or so on toys= approx. $120.00 a year
*12.50 for yearly shots (I give them myself)
*20.00 a year for flea treatment (fleas are not a big problem in the area I live in)
*$120.00 every couple of years for a rabies shot and general vet check (only the vet can give a rabies shot)
I clip the toes and wash my my pup so I don’t have to pay someone else for that.
I paid $60.00 to have him spayed when we adopted him (low cost spay clinic). My dog bowls, leashes, etc I either already had or I purchased from on the cheap for less than $25.00.
I always keep $250 set aside for unexpected vet visits (knock on wood we have not needed to use it).
