Do you ever use mouthwash (if so, why)?

Asked by Dansedescygnes (2881points) April 1st, 2009

Some people seem to use it as a substitute for brushing even though it’s not supposed to be. But it never seemed necessary to me, so what are the reasons for using it?

I’m not really considering using it; I was just inspired to ask this from that gross bitter taste I get in my mouth when I wake up that seems to be worse than usual today… :\

I use an antibacterial mouthwash (like Listerine) after I brush. I like the way it leaves my mouth feeling clean, and it kills bacteria you can’t kill with toothpaste.

Here’s what the ADA has to say about oral care. Note the part about mouth rinses.

I heard on some news report recently that mouthwash could be as effective, (if not more effective) as flossing for reducing plaque build-up.

I brush AND use Scope every day. It’s just kind of the icing on the cake for me. It just completes my oral care routine. It kills germs & leaves my mouth feeling way more clean than just brushing does. I’ll even give my mouth an extra swish before I leave to go somewhere.

Listerine junky here….

totally paranoid about bad breath. I smoke, drink tremendous amounts of coffee, and lately it seems everything I eat is based either on onions or garlic :)

So big gun needed!

I normally use it after brushing. Removes that gakky taste.

@TaoSan Good for you for being aware of it. Too many people neglect their mouths & it’s like….ewwww.

I use it if I know I won’t be eating for a half hour. I use Tom’s of Maine. But, once I get through this bottle, I’m switing to Act. I am extremely prone to cavities, no matter how much I brush and floss, so I use mouthwash in the hopes of not getting so many cavities (didn’t really help, i had 11 cavities last year, and 4 this year)

@casheroo

Oh jeez…I haven’t had a cavity since I got that baby tooth filled many years ago.

I just thought that’s what you do. You use it after you brush (for whatever reason).
