HELP! Whats wrong with my macbook?

Asked by A_Beaverhausen (2443points) April 2nd, 2009

ok, so i have NEVER had a problem with my charger, and then i left my charger at a friends and it got switched with his. i have been using it for about a month now, his seems a little more beat up and just now at work, i plugged my charger in to a power strip and continued surfing. all of a suddenly i hear a BUZZZ noise and i see a little smoke come from where my charger plugs into my computer!!! so i unplugged it real fast and it smelt like burning. WHAT DO I DO? DO YOU THINK MY COMPUTER IS MESSED UP? its running fine for now, do you think it is anable to charge now? WHAT DO I TELL MY FRIEND?

Take it to the Apple store, tell them, and ask for a replacement. They need to make sure your computer is fine, but they should replace the charger. If you have a flash drive, back up everything you can on it. Just in case they need to fix anything.

Edited to add: If you don’t live somewhere with an Apple store, you may need to call them and it might involve lots of mailing and that would totally suck. I hope you live near an Apple store.

Do not try charging it with the same charger. Take both the charger and the MacBook in for a look.

You will almost certainly need a new charger. My guess is that you have some frayed wires near where it plugs in to your computer, and that’s what caused the spark. I’ve seen that in the old-style iBook non-magnetic chargers once or twice, but never in a MacBook. But there is a first time for everything :>)

ive been reading online and this seems like a common problem. i still dont know what i should do about my friend. do i ask for my charger back? it is his charger. it just so happened to fry on my computer.

They won’t know it isn’t your charger. Just take it in. It really shouldn’t matter. I mean, you can tell him what happened and that you are taking it in, but that shouldn’t be a big deal.

@A_Beaverhausen

What does the battery update have to do with your charger?

The MacBooks have been known for terrible battery issues; this is just another attempt from Apple to work on it.
maybe it’s because I don;t know what “FML” stands for…time to go look it up

Is one a chrger for a MacBook and the other for a MacBook pro? They are different wattages. Not sure if that would cause it, but thought I’d double check.

Take it to a shop get it looked at tell your friend to sort it. Oh and the biggest thing to do buy a Windows computer .

@crisw Yes, but if you plug a macbook charger into a macbook pro, is the Pro going to drop its charging wattage?

its ok, it all got worked out. we are sharing the charger for now, my bf is trying to get one off ebay.

@sandystrachan Sorry =) Your response looked like a “troll post”, which is what I was asking. Your post consisted of three ideas loosely collected together: “Take it to a shop get it looked at” / “tell your friend to sort it” and the kicker: “Oh and the biggest thing to do buy a Windows computer.” None of which was particularly useful, although neither was my post =)

YHBT, HAND = You Have Been Trolled, Have A Nice Day.

Nothing personal!
