What is the best way to start learning web design?

Asked by wp1211 (90points) April 2nd, 2009

Are there any very beginner tutorials I can buy? Is it worth it to take classes at a community college?

Pay attention to websites you like and try to identify what’s so great about them. I know Fluther has a great website design.

I would say it is very definitely worth it to take a class at a community college. Probably the best option there is in my opinion.
You can also read some basic codes off the web.
And play around with free websites.
You can also try a “for dummies” book.

What I learned, I learned from reading online and messing around myself at free websites. I just know the very basics though and prefer those step-by-step webpage builder sites.

Coffeecup.com has some great cheap software for beginning web design.

W3Schools hands down is the fastest way. But its very good for complex coding.

I have answered this question elsewhere in Fluther many times before. Please do a search for “web design”, or click on your tags, to find some other questions that have been already asked and answered. Here is one of my previous answers.

It’s great to take classes at a community college. If you are not tech-inclined, this is a great way to be introduced to it.

If however you are a techie, there’s nothing better than diving deep into it and setting it up on your personal computer. I can say with 100% confidence that you can become a webmaster without spending one penny, so long as you have the dedication and drive.

I can give you more details if you tell me what areas of web design you want to learn.

Classes are probably not worth it if you’re already computer/net-savvy. I’d recommend the HTML for Dummies book. It’s a great primer that doesn’t intimidate and allows you to advance quickly if you’re into learning HTML.

Ultimately though, the only way to learn is to open a text editor and preview your incremental changes and experiments in your browser. Don’t be afraid of breaking anything and find a good forum (such as Fluther) to ask more questions as you advance.

I would advise you to begin learning the basics of web design such as HTML and CSS.

From there you can move on to learn other helpful tools such as Adobe Photoshop to be able to do nicer looking websites combining its use with your knowledge of HTML and CSS.
