If you were a long haul truck driver, with a family, how would you deal with the day to day pressures of life on the road?

Asked by Blondesjon (34000points) April 5th, 2009

Could you stand being away from your family for extended periods of time?

How would you combat the loneliness of being on the road?

How would you stay alert at the wheel?

Would you start listening to country music?

Would your family tolerate that?

@eponymoushipster…I believe they prefer “lot lizard”. It sounds much more professional and, in my humble onpinion, a shade more respectable than “whores”.

I could stand being away from family. I’m already away from my Girl too much.

Coffee and cigarettes are a trucker’s best friend.

I would start listening to country music, if it was made before 1997.

@boots…I prefer my country music circa 1937.

@Blondesjon That would be some good stuff, but that’s discounting 60’s/70’s, which was pretty damn good. JC, Waylon, Conway Twitty, Lorretta Lynn, ect…

That is good stuff, too.

it certainly is

I personally couldn’t handle being away from my family so much, I’d miss them too much.
I would listen to a lot of music, bring a laptop and talk to loved ones when I got a chance. I’m not too familiar with a truckers schedule, but I doubt they have a lot of time :(
I wouldn’t start listening to country music. Unless I was being paid to do so.

@Blondesjon “lot lizards” sounds way worse than “whores”. but either way, they’re whores.

I know plenty of long haul truckers, and being away from family is always the worst. As for the country music, many truck drivers listen many things except that. That is a Hollywood stereotype. I had a long haul trucker come through my gate the other day, an obvious ex-Marine (you can just tell by the manner of speech) and his music of choice, the song from the sixties Loco-motion by Little Eva. What significance it had for him, I have no idea. The days of truckers being illiterate hillbillies with just two teeth in their head and an IQ equal to the air pressure in spare tire are pretty much over. Those guys are still out there, but today, being a professional truck driver takes a lot of skill and intelligence.AVS systems make ‘fudging’ a log book rather tough, too.

Today’s truckers have it much better thanks to technology and larger sleeper houses, but being away from family is still rough.
