General Question

Do you think lurve points detract from the true objective of Fluther?

Asked by rooeytoo (26986points) April 5th, 2009

It seems as if some people, apparently in the quest to rack up huge numbers of points, answer serious questions offhandedly and without consideration to the one who asked the question or to others who responded earnestly. Sometimes it is funny and that is okay but often, it is simply inane or rude and therefore somewhat annoying. Are the points necessary?

I don’t really like them either. Often people just click “Great Answer” on any comment that agrees with their opinion. I guess people think that whichever side gets the most lurve “wins” the argument. It seems kind of childish to me.

@Ivan—Should we copy and paste what other people said first, then, instead of just giving a GA to the quips we agree with and letting people come up with other answers?

@MacBean I don’t think the idea is to see which side of the argument has the most supporters. If someone has said something you agree with, then it has already been said, and the argument will stand on its own merits, not on its popular support.

What is with all the lurve questions these days? I don’t think the system is a problem. I think most people try to answer questions legitimately (or occasionally funny/sarcastically) but I think they are answering the way they are because they want to, not because they’re whoring for lurve.

@Ivan—But that doesn’t change the fact that there is agreement. Would you rather see one “I think/feel [x]” with 15 GAs, or “I think/feel [x]” 16 times?

Initially, yes.
Now, not so much.

The novelty of the points wears off, although I do admit I watch them still.

Ivan's avatar

@MacBean I don’t necessarily want to see either.

@Ivan—Then why are you here? I never see you do anything but bitch about Fluther.

I honestly don’t think anyone is in competition for lurve. It’s not like you can do anything with it… it’s just a matter of feeling appreciated for a good question or answer. We just are who we are, and some of us happen to be jokesters.

If you find the lurve pointless, great. Don’t ever click on it. No big deal. Like it, don’t like it – the sun is still going to rise tomorrow and life will go on. Funny how that happens.

Lurve isn’t used to show who wins. Lurve is basically like a pat on the back. Some people like your question – lurve. Some people like your comment – lurve. Some people think you’re funny – lurve. Some people just are giving lurve for the hell of it – lurve.

Have you ever sent someone a card, just for the heck of it? Complimented someone? High-fived, someone? That’s all it is, lurve. There isn’t a big plan behind it. No big mythical monster. You don’t even have to drink the red kool-aid.

It is what it is, lurve.

@Ivan—Thanks, I killed some time GAing all the answers that basically told you to STFU or GTFO.

@augustlan – I enjoy the funny answers, AstroChuck usually comes up with something that is so off the wall, it is always funny. I think it is often annoying when you see the same answers by the same people on every question. It is like talking because they like to hear themselves not because they have something worthwhile to say only here it is typing so they get the 5 points for responding. I don’t mean hitting the Great Answer button, I mean talking about something you seemingly have no interest in, just gotta get those points!

augustlan's avatar

@rooeytoo But you don’t get any points just for asking or answering. Your lurve is only increased if someone found your question or answer to be of value… even it the value was only comic relief.

rooeytoo's avatar

@augustian – The box at the top says +5 for answering. I thought that meant the points were awarded for responding. But you are saying it is only awarded if someone hits great answer??? Wow in that case I am impressed with my meager score, that is a lot of great answer hits for not that many answers.

Perhaps the wording of the explanation of awards could be altered, as it is, I was certainly mislead.

augustlan's avatar

@rooeytoo Yep, you only get points if someone hits Great Answer or Great Question. You also get one (I think) point for visiting two days in a row, plus some other amount (I can’t remember) if someone adds you to their fluther. That’s it. :)

@MacBean Thank you for proving my point.

Can you tell me, first, what the “true objective of Fluther” is?

Because it seems to me that there’s no clear consensus on that, and depending on what it is, lurve can contribute or detract.

wundayatta's avatar

The CIA has been attempting to infiltrate the inner sanctum of fluther in order to answer that very question. So far, they have had no success. They are considering giving up, and turning the job over to a bunch of poets and soccer players.

Bluefreedom's avatar

The true objective of Fluther is to ask and answer questions. If lurve were to go away, people wouldn’t stop asking and answering questions. Lurve doesn’t do anything detrimental to the purpose of Fluther. People might perceive that it does but that’s on them.

Ivan's avatar

@Bluefreedom Perhaps a more relevant question is ‘does lurve contribute to the purpose of fluther?’ I think you’ve touched on it already.

The one who dies with the most lurve, wins.
