Do you think that fences make good neighbors?

Asked by FGS (1932points) April 5th, 2009

I grew up in Colorado. EVERYONE has a fence around their yard. Now I live in Kentucky and it seems that fences are the exception, not the norm. What do you think?

Rare to see a fence here. But most people own at least 5 acres of land and many (including me) own more. There are some dairy farmers that put barbed wire around the perimeter of the farm to keep the cattle in and the coyotes out.

@gailcalled I don’t own nearly that amount of land, I live in a fairly suburban area so the houses are close. I’m a big fan of private space all the same.

No.

Fences that don’t have a function (like keeping the dog from running into the street, or for keeping the neighbors from seeing every little thing you do) creep me out. I understand suburban fences, since everyone lives so close and privacy is sacred, but when I’m visiting my grandpa in the country the fence in the woods where the property line is bothers me.

I grew up in a suburb of LA where everyone has fences, and a good portion have six foot block walls surrounding their property. Here in The Cornfield only about 50% of houses have fences. When the ex and I moved here we specifically sought out a house with a fence. I like the fence. I need the fence.

It’s hit or miss where I am, you have to have one if you have a pool. I imagine most people have them if they have pets. Some people just like them. I wish we had a fenced in front yard, so my son could be in there, while I cleaned my car out haha

Yes, yes and yes! On our side, because I do have a child – kindergarten age, and we live in a very suburban area. I wish we had already finished building on our land! Also, it keeps wandering dogs from our yard – our neighbor insists that if your do poos on his year – you better get it all up; however, the courtesy is not returned.

Also, we have a pool We have two fences, one around the perimeter of the backyard, and another fence, around the pool. Too many dangerous accidents, with children.

If we lived in a less populated area, I might consider the absence of a fence. I loved when we had land, growing up, and we could just roam. I loved that freedom.

I would have to say they certainly do. I have neighbor issues and wish I had enough money to put up a fence. I’d love a natural one. I see how having a fence can be a benefit. It helps with privacy, it helps with neighbors being out of “your business”, it helps for safety etc…

But I do not see how having a fence can be a detriment. If anyone does I’d love to hear it because I’m racking my brain trying to think of one…. (seriously, I am)

Although if you have a lot of land I do not see why one would be absolutely necessary, perhaps a portion fenced off though.

I live in a rural area with lots of space. The only “fencing” folks have here is the invisible fence buried to keep their dogs on their own property.
Good neighbors make good neighbors.
Or maybe it’s because we are permitted to use firearms legally as long as we are 500 ft from a house.

Yes. Really.
