How do you find salvage yards in your area?

Asked by squirbel (4297points) April 7th, 2009

I was watching HGTV and one of the designers claimed she found some old doors and windows at a salvage yard.

Habitat for Humanity runs some, they call them Restores, I think. I don’t know how widespread they are though.

Here are the Habitat for Humanity stores.

If you Google ‘Restore’ you get a bunch of hits, I would start there.

Yeah, I went on that lead after he posted… but I think I’m looking for an architectural junkyard. [That’s what I’ve learned from googling so far.

Just called the local ReStore in my area.

Most ‘junkyards’ aren’t specialized, it’s more of a you go and search and hope kind of deal.

Good luck with the Restore! :)

Yellow Pages.

As @Marina says, Yellow Pages. Also in our area, the salvage type businesses are pretty much all in one part of town (except for Habitat for Humanities store, which is over by the new lumber stores) so you can basically cruise the strip.

Otherwise I might see about making friends with someone who does remodeling, especially in the older parts of town.

Try “used building material”. Most recyclers are very eclectic and carry a wide variety of goods.

Sometimes shipping isn’t all that much. When we remodeled, I purchased stained glass from Europe, as well as a door, etc. Google what exactly you’re looking for. I purchased a huge, antique four-piece bedroom outfit on the internet. Good luck…everything AND the kitchen sink is out there.
