Similar songs in the Trip Hop genre?

Asked by Waffle (248points) April 10th, 2009

My friend is trying to make a skiing video and really likes the song “Wake Up and Smell The Millennium” by Nobody which you can listen to here.

It’s under the genre “Trip-Hop” and after exploring several albums by Trip-Hop artists, have found nothing close.

Do you think you can help me out?

Akiko by Guitar
Lord Leopard by Caribou
Jackals And Vipers In Envy Of Man, Pt. 4 by Sixtoo

Found these by plugging it into Pandora. (your link does not work.) Here is a link to listen to it on Playlist..

Try DJ Shadow’s Organ Donor, it will fit the profile, but is a bit more up tempo. Also RJD2 has music similar to this, however he tends to use more strings in his melodies.

Other potential artists: Kid Koala, Terva Whateva, Blockhead, and ummm…. that’s all I can think of now. Let me know if you want me to try and dig up some more. Also most of these guys are more turntablists than anything, but they have a lot of great music, you just have to look for it.

I may not be sure of exactly what trip hop is, I used to like a group called “The Orb”. I just looked them up again and they are described as Ambient Techno, DUB (whatever that is), and Trip Hop. I really like the song “little fluffy clouds”.

Massive Attack are the godheads of this genre. I am so not kidding.

Here’s a working link for the song. On that page you can also find last.fms recommendations for similar songs.

What about Chemical Brothers, Portishead and say Theivery Corporation?

You could do an original composition on Garageband that sounds similar, and not violate copyrights…

to build upon @AlfredaPrufrock‘s answer… you could build your own music from samples here…

At both of the above sites, all sounds are licensed under the Creative Commons license. You can download and sample, no worries.

Good luck with the game!

You could try some artists on the sister labels Tru Thoughts and Zebra Traffic

Here is a sample of some of their artists tracks.
