Usually a bunch of disgruntled Christians acting out their rebellion against their religion.

That there is a religion(?) dedicated to my ex-husband? (ok, bad joke…I’m just saying…)

live_rose's avatar

hmmm I think of some of my friends who dabbled in it. I think they were more enamored by the idea than the entity itself. i think as silly as it sounds its gotten a bit commercialized.

buster's avatar

Satanism means listening to music like Deicide
And acting like an animal. Doing whatever feels good.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I think it’s counter productive to being happy. Satanism thinks nothing of others, only the individual.

Zen's avatar

@buster Yep, you win.

Satanism doesn’t mean anything to me really because it is a belief system that I don’t subscribe to. Since I’m not an authority on the subject, I speculate that Satanism is a theism based around Satan himself and possibly his minions also.

In my personal opinion and what I learned growing up, Satan represents an angel cast out of Heaven and is partially or completely responsible for perpetuating evil in the world and tempting mankind to do things that aren’t morally correct or acceptable. How my views would compare to those of a Satanist are something I’ll probably never know because I don’t know any Satanists and I don’t know anything about how they think or operate.

mattbrowne's avatar

I think it’s a dangerous cult.

essieness's avatar

I don’t really know, but I don’t see how it can be appealing to worship a supposedly evil entity. I’m not sure why someone would invite that into their life. Maybe I don’t understand it very well, but it just seems backward to me.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

I always thought being a satanist meant you do whatever you want, whenever you want.. basically brain dead madness… like something was around backwards in their brain .. opposite day maybe.. so that they didn’t realize the difference between good and evil.. but by definition it’s just “worship satan” right? so… I guess in that regard maybe a satanist is just like a Hillary Clinton supporter.. =)

Staalesen's avatar

I think they are funny, atleast the ones I know… with youth rebellion, upside down crosses, Lavey, etc..

I think you’re all forgetting a very serious evil that exists in this world that must be destroyed:

alossforwords's avatar

Seriously though… Satanism is as brain-dead of a religion as… well… the other thousand religions that exist. Satan in literature embodies a dark being that hates man for being loved by a god. Who wants to claim their god is a bastard angel that hates the very material that they are made of?

The answer: Rebellious teenagers and people that should not be allowed to vote.

Sadly, Satan is often misunderstood:

Satanism is the intentional antonym of conventional Judeo-Christian Theology. It’s just another religion. All religions are based upon subjective faith, having little tolerance for objective Truth.

Anton LeVay might have some helpful info. If not, you could always check with this guy. Since I don’t believe in hell, satanism means pretty much nothing to me.

When I think of Satanism the first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of disgruntled gothic kids. (I am by no means suggesting that all gothic kids are Satanists!) I am sure to the people who pratice it, that it is a very real religon to them and that they get something out of it. As with most religions I think it is a stupid waste of time. Just my opinion.

kenmc's avatar

Satanism is self-worship. It’s not about bowing down before a red dude with horns.

They use the term “satan” very loosely.

YARNLADY's avatar

The difference between people who consider themselves “real” Satanists and those who act out their disgust for the Christian religion is a huge difference. The definition is as difficult to pin down as the answer to which religion is true.

Most people who refer to Satanists are talking about those disgruntled Christians who claim to worship the anti-christian concepts personified by their “devil”.

RedPowerLady's avatar

Satanism means worshiping evil or negative energy and such. That’s what I always thought.
Whereas atheism means believing in nothing.
And Agnostic means you don’t know what you believe.

The only reason I include the last two definitions is because when I was younger I would get the three confused. I know that may seem odd but I did.

Of course that is all over simplifications.

I think Satanism is the invention of conservatives to brand behavior that they find objectionable. There are no Satanists. Satanism makes no sense. To say that what is evil is good leads to self-contradictions. If it is evil then it is good, but then it must not be good, but then it is….

aidje's avatar

When I hear “Satanism” I think first of LeVeyan Satanism, which doesn’t actually have anything to do with worshiping Satan. (It is still in stark contrast to Christianity, though.)

TheKNYHT's avatar

Just as there are various denominations that represent religions the world over, including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity (in its religious form), among others, Satanism too has its various ‘denominations’ or factions.

Among the many sorts, some worship Satan as an actual person, or as an ideal of rebellion against the religous and status quo. They all worship themselves as their own right of godhood.

There are the rebel youth sort of Satanists that listen to Black Metal music, don the many paraphernalia, usually upside down crosses, pentacles, pentagrams, the double Bolt, etc. They are mostly ‘dabblers’ that is, they study satanic rituals, and compile an amalgam of different ceremonies that suit their purpose. Most of these groups/covens, while short lived can still prove dangerous, as it can lead to theft, grievious assault and battery, raping, even murdering.
People tend not to take these sort seriously, and many of these sort of Satanists grow out of this particular expression of rebellion.
The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey echoes Aleister Crowleys sentiment: “Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of thy law.”
Or as Anton himself once said, “Satanism is just good old fashioned libertinism with a religious handle.” The sex and drugs and rock n roll gig. These sort may or may not see Satan as an actual being.

There are other Satanists that are among the wealthy (and bored) and these include your higher end of society such as Judges, Politicians, Doctors, Lawyers, Executives, Millionaires, etc. Often such organizations as these are very powerful, and involve trafficking of contraband, drugs, even human beings (sold as slaves). They are very secretive, very low key, and are often seen as respectable citizens of the community. These likewise may or may not view Satan as a legitimate creature.

Another kind of Satanist akin to this last one mentioned is known as the “generational Satanist” and these pass on their religious convictions and knowledge to subsequent generations. These are some of the most dangerous sort of Satanists, and like the previous group mentioned, they are very secretive, involved in many of the same sort of activities, and may use a cover personality to obfuscate their true nature.
These sort are intellectual seekers as they are heavily involved in researching both Satanism specifically and the occult in broader terms.
They often regard Aleister Crowley and Eliphas Levi as heralders and prophets of a coming Satanic Age (though Crowley himself was better known as an occultist than an overt Satanist).

Generational Satanists are close cousins to what are known as Luciferians, and these, of all the many catagories are the most lethal, and powerful. These are the sort you find in multitudes of other organizations such as the Masons, Knights of Columbus, the dozens of groups and organizations that have splintered off of Alexander Weishaupt’s old organization known as the Illuminati (refer to the pyramid design on the back of your dollar bill; this symbol is ancient, thousands of yrs old, and Alexander exploited it for the purpose of promoting his organization in attracting occult adepts). One may find Luciferians as Heads of State or high ranking political leaders throughout the world.

Luciferians primary objective is in bringing about a one world order under the Lordship of Lucifer, causing all people to openly worship this being. Obviously these believe in a literal being known as ‘Lucifer’ or Day-Star.

I still maintain that if you take Satanism to mean service to Satan, it simply does not exist. I say that you can’t point to any individual outside of a mental institution who desires the triumph of evil.

YARNLADY's avatar

@TheKNYHT please site your source, I would be interested to know where this excellent answer came from

bea2345's avatar

I think some people have been watching too many horror movies. Pure, unadulterated evil must be quite uncommon, if only because we live in a finite universe. I might be a bad person, destined for Hell; but I still enjoy the good things, like the taste of fresh fruit, the feel of bath water on the skin – read C.S. Lewis (especially The Screwtape Letters). Those things are provided for us by Somebody and it is certainly not Satan.

LostInParadise's avatar

Here is my final argument for why Satanism makes no sense. We may differ in the specifics of what we consider evil, but whatever we classify as evil consists of things that we think it is wrong to do. Then to embrace evil would be to say that it is right to do what we think it is wrong to do. Makes no sense.

There may be people who we consider evil, but these people do not feel that way about themselves. Nobody is going to go around and say, “I believe in doing things that are evil.”

TheKNYHT's avatar

@YARNLADY Unfortunately most of the information I provided above are from a multitude of sources, that I’ve recalled by memory, so I can’t be sure what facts I’m remembering from what sources.
Any way, here they all are:
The Adversary By Mark Bubeck Moody Press
Angels: Elect and Evil By Fred Dickasen Moody Press
Satanism: The Seduction of America’s Youth By Bob Larson
Satan’s Underground By Lauren Stratford Harvest House
Satanism By Schwarz and Empey
Schemes of Satan By Mike Warnke (this author fell into disrepute over 15 yrs ago, nevertheless his research for this book is excellent).
The Kingdom of the Occult (particularly the section on Satanism) By Dr. Walter Martin.
Plus lots of articles books that I read when I was investigating and participating in the occult when I was a teenager: MANY moons ago!
Hope this helps!
OOPS! I forgot! In regards to Luciferians, The New World Order by Ralph Epperson Publius Press: Also by the same author: Masonry Against Christianity.

@bea2345 Satan is a real being: not dressed in a red union suit, adorned with horns, pitchforks and pointed tail and cloven hooves, but a fallen Cherub (Highest rank of super-angel) directly under the level of God, and supervised the organization and administration of all other angelic beings; he fell, and persuaded 1/3 of the entire angelic host to rebel with him against YHWH.

He is the very embodiment of evil, and those who have come out of Satanism in its purist form will tell you beyond doubt that he exists and is unquestionably entirely, morbidly, evil.

YARNLADY's avatar

@TheKNYHT Thanks for the list. I do appreciate it. Your writing sounded so much like an article that I had recently read that I thought it came from the same source, and I was trying to find it again. You write very well, have you considered writing for wikipedia, they love well researched, well written work like this. I do editing work, verifying sources

bea2345's avatar

@TheKNYHT Oh, I quite agree with you. It’s only that evil manifests itself in very subtle ways, and too often, comes in a mixed bag of good and not-good. Satanism is a no-brainer, because Satan can do nothing for you. The story of Faust is a metaphor for that idea.

Jeruba's avatar

Then there’s the Temple of Set.

TheKNYHT's avatar

@bea2345 Nor can one genuinely “sell ones soul to the devil” for very specific reasons, Satan by default owns this planet already lock stock and barrel; or at least he did until the title deed was purchased back by our kinsman goel.

@Jeruba Michael Aquino, Lt. Col. of the US Army? His is one step away from LaVeyian satanism, that tends to take the person of Satan a bit more seriously (there are those that say the same about LaVey, that all his flamboyance was a mere show to hide his more nefarious activities ::shrugs::).

Shuttle128's avatar

I was under the impression that Satanists simply worship themselves and took the name Satanist because the worship of the self was exactly opposite of Biblical teachings. They use the name of Satan to distinguish the religion as an opposite of Christianity.

TheKNYHT's avatar

@Shuttle128 Yes, you certainly are correct in that impression, absolutely! All satanists regard themselves as the god of their own destiny, so they worship themselves, and their empowerment over their own lives, denying any God that would claim such power over them. That’s why of all the satanic holidays the one that’s preeminent of them all, is one’s own birthday.
Having said that however, one must understand that there are different kinds of Satanists; some believe in the personality of a real Satan, others don’t. Those that don’t are more often than not merely reactionaries against Christianity, most notably the Roman Catholic church, since it was the most predominant Church when the rising of this particular brand of Satanism came into being.

TheKNYHT's avatar

@YARNLADY thank you lady for your kind words! I do have a passion for writing, and often write entries in two blogs I have; I also have an unfinished manuscript for a fantasy novel I started years ago, that I’m desirous to complete.
I never did consider working for such as wikipedia, but that might prove interesting.
In any event, your compliment has been warmly received! : )

I myself am a Satanist. To me, Satan is the adversary. The adversary of being a sheep that follows & turns the other cheek. Being a Satanist is just embracing what you are by nature & not feeling judged or condemned for doing what comes most naturally. “If you’re going to be a sinner, be the best sinner on the block”. Being brought up in a very religious home, I was brow beaten with all of the self hate, shame, & condemnation that Christianity thrives on. To me, Satan is the redeemer of self acceptance. All of those foolish things people do to try to earn their way into heaven, when all you have to do is be yourself to go to hell.
