When you're feeling sorry for yourself, is there a song or genre of music that makes your pity party that much better?

Asked by essieness (7703points) April 11th, 2009

Nuttshell by Alice in Chains is my ultimate “I hate my life” song. Not that I hate my life, but we all have our days.

Gospel music usually works for me.

Anything by the Smiths is the pinacle of the pity party.

Poison, by Alice Cooper, or Every Rose has its Thorn, by Poison.

Also U2, by UB40, or 2L8 by U2.

I have an obscene collection of music….so, in general, there is probably a song (or songs) that fit EXACTLY how I feel at any given time. My latest angsting has led me to lots of depressing country music and “I’m Not That Girl” from the musical Wicked.

Rock n’ Roll I guess. Perhaps something harder than what I usually listen to (not thrash metal, maybe just some AC/DC or Deep Purple)

Hi @Jack79 – ACDC are awesome. How ya doin?

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr.

Just about anything that I can cry in my beer to.

I listen to gregorian chants while I soak in the hot tub with a glass of wine. When the wine is gone, I lock up the pity in it’s own little box until the next time I can set aside for my indulgence.

It depends on what my pity party is about, but usually some soft rock about a depressing situation will get my emotions running pretty low… Secondhand Serenade’s “Stay Close, Don’t Go” when my love life is in a mess and John Mayer’s “Gravity” and “Something’s Missing”... do it for me every time…

@essieness…I forgot to mention that it’s also a family tradition.

James Taylor, “You Got a Friend”.

Yeah

Warren Zevon’s last album before his death, recorded when he was fully aware of his terminal lung cancer.
It is just so upbeat yet downbeat and highly bittersweet.

High energy music with a touch of angry and restlessness because it’s distracting from the pity.
