In your opinion should films focus more on animatronics that CGI?

Asked by Myndecho (948points) April 12th, 2009

Maybe my opinion will change when CGI becomes so great that it’s almost impossible to tell what’s real and what CGI, but for now TV shows and films with CGI lack a certain something that animatronics fills nicely, the sense of gritty realism.

Depends what they are trying to achieve. Different tools for different jobs. There’s just as much crap animatronics out there as there is poor cgi.

I preferred the stage version of Beowulf, but that’s just me.

How about the writing?
I don’t mind watching old crappy effects no one ever believed when the story is compelling, and the dialoge engaging.

I’d prefer that the entire movie be in focus.

I can’t imagine The X-Men without CGI.
Animatronics wouldn’t cut it there.

@fireside
As some of the other people have said some films wouldn’t be possible without CGI of course in them case they should use it.

I’d like to see the Wolverine movie coming out without the FX, actually. Apropos X-Men.

As long as the story is good, I don’t care.

@Benny I agree: just saw Last Chance Harvey – a good film.

We could call it “Wolverine-unplugged” or “Wolverine-acoustic”. We could even spell it right.

@filmfann Cute.
Unplugged, original recordings and concerts are always better, eh? (Read: Eric Clapton).

No, both will coexist nicely for the next 10 years. Midterm, CGI is the future.
