Can one deposit checks by mail?

Asked by seekingwolf (10410points) April 12th, 2009

Okay here’s my issue…I use a local chain bank while I’m at college. I really love it and they have great online tools. However, they are only located in PA and I’m going back home to upstate NY.

I’m going to be making money over the summer and will be paid in checks. I don’t want to open a new account at the local bank here because it’s a hassle and they are expensive in my town!

Can I somehow mail the checks to the bank and have them deposited? I’d use my debit card to get the money if I needed it.

You can mail deposits to a bank for deposit to your account. Speak the manager, and let them know you will be doing this. When you endorse the checks, you will need to use a restricted endorsement. “For deposit only to account 12344567” Then endorse the check. Make copies of the checks in each deposit.

Depending on your bank, they may charge you a small fee for doing this.

If your checks are all coming from a single source, they may agree to do direct deposit for you.

If your bank has a website, that’d be the place to check first. If no information can be found there you can call your branch office for more details. I’ve never done it myself but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work .

ATM isn’t an option I assume?

Thank you! I’ll check with them tomorrow and see!
I didn’t know that you could write all that on the back of the checks…as you can see, I’ve never done this before.

Yeah I looked online and couldn’t find an address…I’ll call the branch tomorrow.
ATM def isn’t an option as this is a PA-only bank and they don’t have any ATMs near my home. I don’t even know of a local ATM back home that takes deposits; you can only check your statement or make a withdrawal.

The Many Lives of Alfreda includes several years as a bank teller.

They may give you a deposit register to mail with the checks, and then will mail it back to you with a receipt.

Would those be the same sort of deposit strips that I use when I go to the bank normally to make a deposit?

If so I would just take like 15 or so of those blank strips home with me and then use them when I mail my checks. :)

They should be able to encode them with your account information for you, or they may order you a pad of deposit slips (often there is no charge for printed deposit slips.)

Okay FYI, I just called the bank and spoke to the manager.

She said that I just needed a teller to make a note on my account that mailed in checks are okay to deposited to my account (she made the note right away). She gave me the address of the local branch and told me to write “Deposit Only Account #” on the back. :) I won’t need a deposit slip.

It will take a few days for me to get access to the money, but I’m fine with that. I don’t spend too much anyway. :)

I’m really happy that I can do this! Thanks for the advice!
