Does anyone know how to make a computer see the hard drive space on the "other side" of a partition?
my wife’s laptop keeps putting up a message saying that there is critically low memory available and to delete items to make room on the drive, even though there is over 20 gigs of room on the drive on the other side of the partition.

It’s going to keep warning you about that one partition. It sees each partition as a separate drive, so it wants you to know that one drive is running out of room. There is probably a way to turn it off in the Control Panel, but I’m not certain were exactly.
To utitlize the unused space on the hdd you need to partition the unused space and then format it before you can start using it for storage.
Vista has a utility for this.
I have to ask what is on the other partition. As far as Windows is concerned, it’s a separate disk. You can move some data over there to free up space on the primary partition – depending on what it’s being used for. If this is a dual boot system, you may have problems with that.
You can resize both partitions with Partition Magic or Partition Commander without losing any data. Maybe this is the solution for you.
Is the full partition a recovery drive? If you got the computer from HP, that’s the most likely case. I would not mess with the paritions. All you have to do is save on the free partition instead of the full partition.
