Other than a pen or marker, what would cause a "pen mark" to appear on my laptop monitor screen?

Asked by Mr_M (7624points) April 13th, 2009

The answer is NOT a pen. I have a mark on my monitor that kind of looks like a pen mark, about a quarter of an inch long. It resembles a large “apostrophe”. It’s not on the glass. It’s under the glass and it’s black. I never heard of anything like it. I DO know laptop monitors sometimes have problems with pixels. Anyone ever hear of something like this? SONY VAIO, Windows XP.

Do you have a cat? I have seen cats scratches on screens that sound kinda like this. Are you sure glass is the right word? I’m not sure of any screens by sony that are covered in glass. Apple seems to be the only one I know of that does glass covered screens.

I DO have a cat. I do NOT know for a fact that it’s glass. A scratch on the screen results in a mark?

Aside from a scratch, it could be a tiny crack in the screen.

Yep.. I bought a laptop for 50$ since a cat had a go at the screen. Tons of thin strips of dead pixels from a cat. They were just about 5 pixels wide. Sounds like the cat took a swipe it something.

If its a dead pixel and nothing to do with the actual screen cover itself, have you tried rubbing the area ?
Also you could try a program to test, and see if it is the pixels at fault .

jrpowell's avatar

Try rubbing you finger over the area. Does it feel any different? This certainly sounds like a hardware problem. And I doubt it is anything internal.

Mr_M's avatar

Doesn’t feel any different.

@sandy, WHAT program can I use to test pixels?

sandystrachan's avatar

This website is a pixel test ,with nothing to install. http://www.gdargaud.net/Hack/DeadPixels.html

And this one is an install http://www.laptopshowcase.co.uk/downloads.php?id=1

Also just found this one for you it claims it will , Test, Fix and repair pixel problems .

I tried the first one. One every screen it looks like someone took a pen and put an apostrophe (or accent mark) on one of the letters here.

Might be a dead insect?

My 3 year old!

Have you tried taking a screenshot yet? If it shows up in the screenshot then we know it is a software problem. If it doesn’t it is hardware problem.

edit :: does it move?

Mr_M's avatar

It does NOT appear in a screenshot. It does NOT move.

@sandystrachan, I downloaded and installed your last suggestion. Mark is still there.

Mr_M's avatar

I WILL pass on that. Besides, my screen doesn’t have ANY plugs.

Did you ever have your graphics card looked at?
Weren’t you having problems with that last week?

Mr_M's avatar

Status of the card problem: To make a LONG story short, I uninstalled the card using Device Manager and system booted successfully. Then Windows re-installed the card. This was yesterday. Since that time, I’ve not had problems YET. By booting successfully, I am able to run scans and will do a ghost b.u.

Your screen is fucked. The screen is hosed. I doubt the backlight is bad. It is a spendy fix. the actual LCD screen is bad.

Sorry, and I hope someone can come along and prove me wrong.

Mr_M's avatar

I wouldn’t pay to fix it. It’s just a small mark.

D.I.Y get a screen from Ebay or local computer shop they should be cheap as chips . Aim for a spares or repair system, will help you out in the long run

You could always live with it until its time to get a new laptop…
