Do you oppose or support the Cybersecurity Act of 2009(S773)

Asked by SquirrelEStuff (10012points) April 13th, 2009

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-773

A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes.

This is where it gets fishy.
Sec.18 The President:
(2) may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network;

If there is any kind of emergency. I do not want to depend on corporate media to tell me what is going on, I want to see and hear first-hand experiences on youtube, etc.

How do you guys feel about this legislation?

Paranoia is a good thing, generally, and you’re right about it. However, the real urgency for this is if a computer virus starts in, and no one can control it, they want to be able to shut down the distributers.
You know, the whole Terminator 3 thing.
I was kind of surprised he didn’t already have that power.

NEVER, EVER, GIVE THE GOVERNMENT THE RIGHT TO TAKE SOMETHING FROM YOU

If there were a true emergency they would do what they needed to do regardless of what laws are on the books. Just ask anyone who spent time in a Japanese internment camp during WWII.

Quit letting the government sell you fear.

@uberbatman : I wish a different president meant different policy, but unfortunately, I think even the purest of intentions succumb to temptation of power. Also, Obama flat out told us that he supported this type of governmental power while Bush was in office. I don’t get where people saw that he was any kind of “change.” Hope, change- those words are rubbish to me when talking about any elected official.

Yeah, this regulation is a healthy pile of bull shite. I agree 100% with @Blondesjon. I don’t know when Americans started trusting our government with our privacy. This is the stuff our founding fathers were trying to prevent from happening!

Christ, the DMCA was bad enough. Give me spam in my inbox, but leave me at least a modicum of anarchy to tap into as needed. No government in the backbone. Otherwise, we’re China.

generally I would not worry too much about it. Generally, a President would never abuse such power (and there are plenty of others that one could abuse). And the reason is simply that there’s not much in it for him, with the risk of becoming unpopular.

But this is an unusual era we’re going through, and it is wise to be careful about such regulations. You have every reason to be suspicious of the one in question.

It’s now 2010 and I’ve been hearing about this again on NPR. There are talks of a central internet kill switch in time of emergencies. I think this is bullshit and needs to be discussed and opposed. Any step toward government control or regulation of the internet needs to be stopped.
