I think being human it just our ability to adapt to complex changes or whatever is put in front of us. Thats what separates us from animals.
The World Without Us by Alan Weisman is a wonderful read.
Humanity often vanishes in war zones as well as in places where folks are starving to death or otherwise under extreme duress. When one’s survival is under siege, one often doesn’t have anything left with which to care about others.
@Darwin I agree with you but there are still deeper and darker holes where survival is not at stake but still humanity has been erased.
@mattbrowne Thanks for the recommendation. I never heard of it before.
I think Dostoevsky agreed that there was no humanity left in some people:
“Indeed, people speak sometimes about the ‘animal’ cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to animals, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.”
The Brothers Karamazov
He believed that people needed to have faith to overcome the inhumanity of others.
yes, Miami, FL is one of them.
Somalia, Darfur, Sudan… any several party cities too like Miami, Ibiza and some parts of Thailand….
@DragonFace: We are not the only animals that adapt to complex change.
I do believe that this is true. I wouldn’t say it is ever all encompassing in any area. But the lack of humanity in many places gets to me sometimes.
I think there are a lot of places where humanity hasn’t yet reached. And yes, some places where it once was and is now missing.
On the whole, I think the world is getting smaller and as it does, humanity will become a much stronger more pervasive force.
