In the current political climate - do you think the gay marriage bill intoduced today by NY gov has a chance of passing?

Asked by KalWest (1389points) April 16th, 2009

Gov. David Paterson announced plans Thursday to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, making a political gamble that he can ride the momentum of other states that have recently allowed the practice.

The proposal is the same bill the Democrat-controlled state Assembly passed in 2007 before it died in the Senate, where the Republican majority kept it from going to a vote. Democrats now control the Senate, but opponents are vowing to make sure this one fails, as well.

The governor’s approval ratings have plunged to below 20 percent, and it’s still unclear how the legislation will play in the state. Paterson says gay marriage is a crucial issue of equal rights in America that cannot be ignored.

“I’m introducing a bill to bring marriage equality to the state of New York,” Paterson said to applause, surrounded by leaders including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Paterson, who is black, framed the issue in sweeping terms, invoking Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe and drawing a parallel between the fight to eliminate slavery in the 1800s to the current effort to allow gay marriage.

“Rights should not be stifled by fear. What we should understand is that silence should not be a response to injustice. And that if we take not action, we will surely lose,” Paterson said.

Paterson said gay and lesbian couples are denied as many as 1,350 civil protections — such as health care and pension rights — because they cannot marry.

I’m from NY and I think it will pass. Patterson, on the other hand, will NEVER get re-elected.

@Mr_M
Do you think he won’t get re-elected because of the proposal?

If it can happen in Iowa…
NY is a leader in so many areas… it’s time for it to be a leader in human rights too.

It could pass. The religious right has really screwed over the Republican party. Hijacking might be the right word.

But I hope the bill passes. Equal rights for all!!

I’m optimistic and crossing my fingers!!!

@KalWest, no. Because of other things he’s tried to do recently.

The Gay marriage thing? It’s ready to be passed. All over. It’s just a matter of time.

I just realized that if gay marriage is totally legalized, I’m gonna need to buy a lot of wedding gifts! I better start saving my money!!!

I think it could be passed, it isn’t like Patterson’s approval rating could get any lower.

It can and probably will pass. Slowly but surely it’s happening all around us.

I get giddy whenever a new state starts the process. New Jersey also has a bill in the works.

@johnpowell Yes! I saw that one. Hilarious! Seriously, WTF California?!?!

I was so sure Gay marriage would pass in California but if it didn’t pass there, I doubt it will pass in NY. I also don’t think the man will be denied re election due to this bill but I’ve already been wrong about current social progressiveness. Blah, just blah.

I live in Cali. This last election for Proposition 8 was very close, and I am confident the next time it comes up, gay marriage wins. Those fighting for gay rights will be much better prepared.

@Trustinglife
Absolutely! We’ll be better prepared, start fundraising earlier and get more tv ads.
