what is it about tomorrow that it might be a day of silence for some? earth day?

casheroo's avatar

Why? i actually have no clue

That’d be impossible with a toddler to take care of. “No” probably comes out of my mouth about fifty times a day.

jrpowell's avatar

Negative.. And I don’t know what you are talking about.

“day of silence”? wasn’t that the movie after GoldenEye?

arnbev959's avatar

That’s tomorrow? Usually I see a poster in school or hear something before hand. I wasn’t aware, but if other people are doing it I’ll participate (usually they are). Otherwise it’s too much of a hassle.

I’m not going to be participating in a day of silence. I have the day off from work but I’d still like to be able to communicate with my spouse. And if we’re talking about silence in a written capacity too, that’s not going to work for me because then I wouldn’t be able to participate on Fluther for a whole day and that is completely unacceptable.

Shit, I’ve done it every year since 2000, but I won’t be able to this year. I have a doctor’s appointment, and it’s my first visit to this particular doctor. No way to avoid talking. Dammit! :(

Why is it a day of silence?
I’m pretty sure I could do it though

avalmez's avatar

can anyone clarify what a day of silence might be about tomorrow?

avalmez's avatar

not sure that i should stfu or not tomorrow

avalmez's avatar

@MacBean thanks for giving the q some context. nope, i’ll be running my mouth off tomorrow not in defiance of the purpose of the day of silence but because i dont think it will make any difference either way

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating
in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing
attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which
is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment.
I believe that ending the silence is the fi rst step toward build-
ing awareness and making a commitment to address these
injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

That is the official notification to keep on you for teachers, bosses, coworkers, etc.

Sorry I didn’t put the link in the details. I kind of failed on that one. Oops.

I would have never guessed that it’s about what it’s about.

adreamofautumn's avatar

@avalmez I know it’s idealistic, but I believe that every voice makes a difference. Things don’t change unless people bring attention to the problem.

It is a wonderful idea. It should be introduced all over the world: Day of Silence for All Oppressed Minorities.

Facade's avatar

@bea2345 I don’t see how that would help anything though. Enlighten me?

PupnTaco's avatar

Not practical for me.

SeventhSense's avatar

I was unfamiliar with it but I guess the idea is a good one in that it would highlight society’s loss of a fair number of people’s voices in the collective.

The reality is that kids die, teenagers die and adults die…either by suicide due to the harassment and bullying or by the hands of others for being gay. One of my friends just described it best when saying that last year her roommate needed help with her homework, she kept saying “I know you’re being silent but just help me”. When she pointed to the card with her reasons on it her roommate was like “come on it’s just me…help me”. When she finally broke the silence at the appointed time she pointed out to her roommate that if she were permanently “silenced” for being gay, no one would have been there to help her. The point was illustrated beautifully in that moment.

@Facade On the Day of Silence there is absolutely none but the most essential communication. You do not talk to your coworkers, you do not answer the telephone – what would that do to the library service! – complete shutdown of all verbal transmissions. The silence would be wonderful, and give most people time for reflection.

I can’t go five minutes without opening my mouth and you expect me to be quiet for twenty-four entire hours?

eponymoushipster's avatar

i’m just afraid it’ll get quiet, and i won’t be able to pass gas unnoticed.

SuperMouse's avatar

My kids would love it if I participated! But sadly I don’t think that will be a reality in my world.

adreamofautumn's avatar

@AstroChuck it’s not actually 24 hours it’s from the time you get out of bed until 5pm I think (maybe 7).

AstroChuck's avatar

Impossible, none the less.

arnbev959's avatar

Maybe I’ll participate on Fluther.

augustlan's avatar

My high school age daughter is doing this for the first time this year… it makes me proud. Since I’ll be home all day tomorrow, with just my husband, it wouldn’t have much of an effect if I did it.

adreamofautumn's avatar

@augustlan I started doing it in high school too. It’s great when high schoolers take the initiative because it is very effective in a setting such as a high school. College campuses are harder because you may not have been speaking much or even noticed much anyways depending on the size of the school. Tell her I said good luck! :)

arnbev959's avatar

I didn’t participate. But, I do support the cause.
