Specifically, when a song is covered, do you listen to it over and over, or can’t you help but “go back” to the original?
I like Adam’s version of Mad World. I’ll listen to Tears for Fears, but never the same. This hasn’t happened to me for “Hallelujah”, e.g. though I liked the Jason kid’s version, too.
Do you have an example of Idol, X factor, ...Talent, et al’s version of a song you like?

I love American Idol in the beginning 2 weeks, when everyone’s terrible
There has never been a singer on American Idol that I would even remotely consider buying music from. It’s all as fake and manufactured as the Monkees.
I mean cmon, who goes home and says “You know what I really want to hear? Taylor Hicks!”
No. In fact, I despise it.
I can’t stomach the music. The only redeeeming quality about the show is Simon Cowell. Now he’s entertaining.
Absolutely not! It’s poison for the mind. But so is all reality television…
Adam ruined Ring of Fire. He has a great voice and will likely win, but I find him better suited for Broadway than I do top 40.
No, I really don’t like American Idol. I think the show is totally overrated. The only time I’ve ever watched it has been for the auditions which is good comedy due to the dismal performances of some people who have convinced themselves that they have some singing talent even though they don’t.
I like to watch he audition process when it’s quite amusing but once they’re over I find it boring!
I kind of forgot it existed. Until it ran over time and cut off the last nine minutes of Fringe on my DVR. Grrrrrr…
I like it, sometimes. Especially as my kids love it – so I try to get into it to experience it with them.
We never had an Idol for Ireland, so there is no Irish Idol haha. Before X-Factor UK was around Simon Cowell used to judge Pop Idol (which was on ITV, which we used to receive in Ireland).
We did have a version of The Voice however; “The Voice of Ireland. It was ok, but none of the winners ever got record deals; so not that great overall. The only thing Voice of Ireland winners get, is a sense of entitlement (which goes away eventually when people forget all about them)
