What can I do during a visit to L.A.?
Experienced backpacker, looking to take in the sights and have a good time in L.A. on a vacation with a friend of mine (who resides there). I love improv shows and sports and such, but what about the city? The surrounding areas, neighborhoods…?
How about an insider’s guide? Lead the way flutherites!

It would help to know what part. LA is a huge place. If you have a car, and start at the airport, you can drive three or four hours and still not get to the other side. If you don’t have a car, that’s a whole other story.
midievil times!!

You might find an adventure in Topanga Canyon. Huntington Gardens in Pasadena is great. An offbeat pick is the free pipe organ concert at 12:30(?) on Wed(?) at the Cathedral of the Angels(?) in downtown LA. The cathedral is built to last 500 years and has a mausoleum down below. It’s a lot of brown stone, which contrasts dramatically with the flash of everything else.
I’ll have a car with my friend…
The zoo, Griffith Park and observatory includes hiking trails and horseback riding.
The Getty Is amazing and Free. If you go to the villa, don’t forget to make reservations. You will have to pay for parking. I love Exposition Park. Venice Beach is a blast, and if you have money, don’t miss Disneyland but buy your tickets online, from COSTCO or from your credit union to save a few bucks on admission.
You might like Malibu Beach too.
