With law and finance jobs in decline, which careers will be "king"?

Asked by mirifique (1540points) April 17th, 2009

A similar question was recently posted in the Times, but pertained to finance careers only. What do you think will happen to legal careers, and consequently, law schools? I’m curious what people think about this

Medical careers will always be king.

Just don’t overspecialize.

Speaking of finance, I’d love to see more lawyers employed in sueing bankers!!!

Green! Any type of job in the renewable energy industry should be good in the short to medium term.

Any thoughts regarding careers for the next 5–20 years, after the Great Recession has leveled off, etc.?

@mirifique I still say green. your 5–20 years is exactly the time frame needed to convert the present energy infrastructure to a “green” system.

@Yetanotheruser Like what sorts of jobs? How do you find them?

There are the hands-on jobs, doing things like installing solar panels or other alternative power sources; then there are other jobs, construction type mostly, that will be upgrading the existing infrastructure (i.e., the grid) to accommodate the newer uses of energy. Then there are the engineering and design positions, which will actually create and plan the whole upgrade. Depending where you’re located, you might want to start with your local power utility, community college, university. It depends if you are looking at training, education, or a job.

One of the busiest guys I know is my local dermatologist. We are growing more bad things on our skin. He just moved to a bigger office.

The other people who are extremely busy are those who still do repair work, roofing, painting, contracting and other hands-on jobs, particularly the small ones.

My husband is a mechanic, his job with a dealership is busier now, than ever before. People are coming in for repairs and used cars…new are still selling (he works on high end cars.) They are so busy, they created a 2nd shift, which he recently moved to, so he could work on his business, as well.

His company is seeing record growth, again, more people repairing cars, in stead of buying a new car. It’s up just about 40% over this time, last year. granted, last year, he was specializing in certain repairs and body work. He has to turn away business, he refers those people to a friend of his that just got started in his own business.

Overall, mechanics are seeing a 20–30% rise in business. (at least in our area)

Finance will always be king. As much as everyone hates it, money makes the world turn – from medicine, to science, to food- it all gets traced to how the markets are doing. The proof lays in the current state of things – the markets tanked and so the rest of the economy is suffering. Corporations pay tons of taxes, as far as a percent goes, which enables the government to subsidize and assist programs that introduce new business and keep existing ones running. Corporate lobbies do equal amounts of good AND bad, but no one really sees the good.

New advances in science (which is a catch all: medicine, food, defense, bio-tech, green tech, water….) require funding to be able to impact the world – a sad statement, but true.

Finance forever.
Like diamonds.

Rules will change. Maybe ethics as well (I am unsure). In the end there will always be the need for financial talents to go around those rules and make money out of nothing, exactly what we all have been busy doing in the last years.
