Any recommendations for renter's insurance in San Francisco?

Asked by nickbaum (49points) April 17th, 2009

Anyone in San Francisco have renter’s insurance they’re happy with? I’ve called a couple of places, and they tell me they have no offers because it’s “high risk of earthquake”. Duh. Yearly cost and coverage would be cool to know too, if you’re comfortable sharing it.

Thanks!

Check with your auto insurance carrier. They may offer coverage or at least be able to refer you to some other sources.

There seem to be a lot of Bay Area residents here. Lots of SF questions lately

JINX! Try whomever you have your car insurance with. It may be a little more costly because of location, but they are insuring content, not the structure.

My daughter’s renter insurance in NYC was $129 a year.

Pic up one of those free apartment hunting guides from a market. Flipping through, you’ll come across major rental companies, some nationwide that list websites, check a few of them to see who they use. When I rented in SF with actual apartment buildings, rental insurance was a built in fee with the rent.

If you have car insurance, definitely check with them first – most places will give you a really good deal if you have multiple kinds of insurance with them. I’ve always been very happy with State Farm, and when we lived in SF (Alameda, actually), our renter’s insurance was less than $100/year, and I’m pretty sure that covered up to $25k (might have been $50k – I can’t remember now…)

You can also get an additional “personal articles” policy if you have specific things that would put you over the $25k – we got a separate policy to insure all of my husband’s camera equipment, and it only cost an extra $30/year.

Ask the neighbors what kind of insurance they have.

Thanks for all the advice. My car insurance (Mercury) can give me a pretty good deal ($122/year), so I think I’ll go with that.
